Hey Guys,

Wanted to let you know that the Nissan Pathfinder (sort of our expedition rig) will be back on Xtreme this weekend.

Let me know what you think......all it will need after this episode are the portals!!!

Cool, I'm exited about this build. The Nissan guys in my circle really appreciate you guys using a Pathy for this build.

I've just been waiting on an episode with an "extreme 4x4" in it, not a dually on 22.5s or a how to make diesel show.:flipoff2:

Seriously though, I hope my DVR doesn't fark up the show again. It keeps cutting off the last 10 minutes or so. I didn't even get to see the CORR truck run. When does the dual purpose TJ come back?

I only caught the end of the episode but looks like a cool project. however I'm curious about whether you are going to have axle wrap issues with portals and leaf springs? it may have already been covered though.

Great episode!
As a Nissan guy I really appreciate this build. Is there going to be a follow up with the finished product or did you wrap it up?

I deleted the episode on accident and I had a question. Did you use a wagoneer axle and convert it or are you getting an entire axle built? I can't remember.

Thanks.

It gets cut off because the show runs 5 minutes late every week.

the same thing was happening to me untill i set the dvr to tape 5 minutes after the show was supposedly over - now i get the whole thing

I was with you when you kept stressing that it will be streetable because of all the highway miles that will be put on it. You kept describing it like an expedition vehicle. Then I lost you when you pull out the portal axles and 37s. Seems like it would have been better with some Toyota axles or D44s and maybe 33s or 35s. Yes, I know the show's name is extreme4x4. Expedition vehicles are all about simplicity and reliability. Toyota axles with some Longfields and smaller 33s would last forever. With ARBs, the trail performance would be acceptable.

With the Toyota axle they would have to change the t case or have a diamond housing made but I hear ya on the simplicity, try finding a part for a custom portal axle in the Australian Outback, or the Alaska highway

I hear what you guys are saying about simplicity and the axles....but this project was screaming for Portals from the minute it came into the shop. The ground clearance we will get with them is awesome.

As for axle wrap on the front....I have a plan for that.

Hey Ian,

great episode. I was really happy to see a Nissan in the spotlight for once! I know your getting flak for the portal setup but I love it. if I had the cash I would convert my SASed Xterra to portals. great work.

Great build, I love my 95. Drop by the forums at www.nissan4wheelers.com/ if you have any questions.

What are the plans for the cage? Maybe you can bother calmini to finish the one they started designing two years ago :flipoff2:

Also NorthWest Fab just put out a Dana 300 doubler for us, you should install one.

i really enjoyed the show but the way it sounded it was like you said the Portals you where using were an aftermarket adaptor or something, was pretty skeptical of how durable that would be. Then I go to Portalteks website and realise I missheard or something and you where actually throwing, according to the pricing on their website, about $13,300 worth of axles under the pathfinder. I wish I had that to invest in my entire heap.:)

One last thing: Where do I apply to be part of yalls camera crew? My employer would never spend that much money on anything for me to make my job easier. :D Hell they would not buy me a $12 tool at work that would have saved me a weeks worth of time chipping rust.

I cant agree more here. 37's and portals, I dont know if you mentioned the gearing numbers but arent you talking like 7643rpm's at 55mph...?

I would have liked to have seen this with dana 44's and skinny 35's.

Ian wheres the suggestion box. I'd love to see a little mini series inside the series, something like "Budget not so extreme 4x4 for the guy with a realistic wallet". I'm not trying to bash the show but I'm sure I'm not the only one here who doesnt have 10g's to spend on axles let alone the entire rig.

Downloaded the two episodes off iTunes and watched the first one last night. I actually enjoyed the information on what it takes you guys to put the show together.

Had to laugh about the bit about putting the rollcage in, cutting it back out, and then reinstalling it for the cameras. Years ago I heard that the SOP on Norm Abrams' show was to build three of the project - one in the design phase, one as a trial run, and then the one in front of the cameras. Also heard that the producer of the show picked the one he liked best of the three for his personal use. :)

So, when is the third episode coming up - the one where you install the portal axles?

after they finish the s10 truggy, so about another six months from now... it seems they either build a truck in one or two episodes or it takes 1-2 years, there is no in between. Though I wouldnt expect it from a TV crew, several complete builds on here have only taken a few weeks.

How about a build up over 6-8 weeks and show something every week or every other week. The whole s-10 truggy this week and then 3 months before you see it again is bullshit and makes the show hard to follow... i have about quit watching it, bc half the time you get a rerun or bolt ons or gear set up tech... not much extreme on extreme 4x4 lately...

flame away...

oh and portals and 37's on a camera truck cum expedition rig is gay.. maybe that is the extreme part...:flipoff2:

I don't know how the gay community feels about portal axles, but I bet they are indifferent.

Whether portals fit depends on what expedition you are talking about. Aren't those Volvo trucks with the portals MADE for expeditions? Portals with 37" tires give as much ground clearance as like 42" tires, with less lift required to boot. The less you bang your axle, the better your expedition is.
Yeah it wouldn't be feasible for most of us, but if I want to see a rig with a $450 in springs and $950 in tires, I can just go outside and look at my XJ.
