I am debating putting a divorce mounted SM420 into the Sami I am getting ready to pick up to get a better crawl ratio (7:1 first gear plus 4.16:1 in the t-case and 5.13 gears in the pigs makes for a 150:1 low range) and still remain CHEAP. I figure for less than $2000 I'd be able to do all that, and keep the total cost of the vehicle under $2500. With the Sm420, I'd be able to mate up a 4.3 liter, 3.8 liter, or any number of other GM motors.
What I'd like to find out is how much weight would I be adding by swapping in the SM420. How much does a Suzuki tranny weight?
Matt (by the way, this will be a trail only vehicle.... )

Stock Samurai tranny can't weigh much more than 50 lbs...
SM420? Pretty damned heavy!

Chevy 4.3 --- VERY DAMN HEAVY.... If you are thinking about one of these, then you're not concerned with weight....
A Sami tranny can be carried by one person without too much effort...

OK.... fair enough..... I didn't realize (although it shouldn't have been much of a stretch of the imagination) that the Suzi tranny was THAT light. I suppose I'll just keep it in place then and get the lower gearing elsewhere.
Thanks!

With $2K to spend, just buy a 6:1 case from Calmini or Rocky Road Outfitters (approx $1100 compl, $900U-install). Stock trans x 6:1 Case x 5.13R&P = 112 Crawl, still pretty good.
