: Ring and Pinion Tooth Counts

I´m fighting with a friend about ring and pinion tooth counts. We´ve now reached the "ah, you´re just an asshole" stage in the argument, so I´ve called a cease-fire until we can find a definative answer. And since he´s got a Niva and has Eastern European blood, it´s prolly a good idea not to make him tooooo mad!!:p

Anyhoo, he´s convinced that the diffs in his Niva are 10/44s, that is 10 teeth on the pinion and 44 teeth on the ring. I called bullshit, as everything I´ve ever heard about diffs is that they are designed to have tooth counts which do not create a repatative mesh. A 10/44 would definitely not meet this criteria.

OK, you could say something smart like it being screwed-up Russian shit, but the project for the Niva was done by Fiat, so that´s not it. I continue to say he´s got shit in his blood. What do y´all think?!?!?

BTW, I know we COULD open it up to take a look or even jack it up and do the tire vs. pinion rotation thing. It´s just more fun to argue and call each other names....:flipoff2: :D

Uhhhh....10 doesn't go into 44 evenly dude. Divide 44 by 10, and I get 4.40.

What you are referring to "repatative mesh" is called a "hunting" gear pattern. They do exist, but only in "round numbered" gearsets, i.e. 3.00 gear for a Ford 9".
It does exist, but 44/10 ain't it.

Uhhhh right back at ya...:flipoff2:

I never said that 10 goes int 44 evenly. What I said, quite clearly I beliieve, is that a 10/44 would create a repetative mesh. That is, there would be frequent and cyclical contact between the same gear teeth...

BTW, you got it backwards on the "hunting" gear pattern. That´s exactly what a NON-REPETATIVE mesh is...

Well, let's settle this one right away. This a Toyota truck gearset I guess? You being from South America, I'm making that assumption. If it's 4.37, then he actually has 35/8 for his ratio. That's why that gearset blows up so often, just 8 pinion teeth. Or, he could have 4.30's, and I "think" those are 43/10. There's no 4.40 ratio for these diffy's, so no 44/10. Again, making some assumptions on what he's running, so I could be way off.

Hey TEX, re-read my original post and you´ll see that I´m talking about a Niva...

Cuz it´s more fun to argue and call each other names.

Besides, I can only count to 37...:flipoff2: :D :flipoff2:

But that would piss off his wife and she´s MILF...:flipoff2: :D

OK, so enough already with the fawking around. So I am to understand that there ARE in fact some gear sets out there which are repetative?? Someone above mentioned a 3.00 ratio... Any others?!?!?

I 2nd that! repetative nose punching untill he says
"dude I'm losssing to much blood..I feel WHOOOZY...you are right!"
then it's settled:flipoff2: now tell him not to foget next time, cause the repetative head butts you just gave him to the nose hurts your mellon:D
