I have a 48 willys with a 302 in it and manual saginaw steering and I want to put different axles under it---I've got a hook on some FJ40 axles out of a '76(front is disc) for $500---I've searched and haven't found any info on this type of swap---so my questions are:
is this the right place to post this or should it be in non-hardcore??---if so mod's move it---
I want to keep it streetable, but make it a more capable wheeler---the existing pinions leak and one front side has been rebuilt by the PO--there's a clunk somewhere, that may be a u-joint I need to crawl under and see, but basically 60 yr old axles(dana 41/25) scare me---
I know about the frame and yes I should buy a new one, but it's not rusty and no cracks so I will box and beef as I see fit--and I don't want to spend that money yet....
has anyone done this and can you either point me to a link to read about it or pass on some wisdom??
is it a smart swap---I'm hoping they are like 55" wide and according to a cruiser site about axles it says they are, but I've seen many say they are 57" wide----anyone have a concrete measurement??
I will be swapping in a np435 or t18 tranny and doing a tera-low d18 and an overdrive---
not sure about springs at this minute--ALCAN, WAGGY or ??? and I'm not sure about going SOA---
I'm guessing I'll have some steering things to figure out and shocks and possible Master brake cylinder---
I know about the birfy's to some extent and longfield's I think are in the near future---
my original thought was 44's out of a 71 jeep, but I can't find any---anyway any words of wisdom would be welcomed---
