Currenty on my zuk, i have the stock sidekick alternator....This is a gm style alternator internally regulated......I would like to switch this over to an external ford version and make an on board welder....
Is there problems with the electrical system when doing this...
Will this mess with my ECU for my 16v kick EFI motor?

I just put one in my truck. I like them a lot. Strong and dependable.
You might have a little problem wiring it up in your rig, tho.... the regulator takes four wires -- +12V, stator, and field. No probs there, but the 4th pin is for a dash warning light. I left this unhooked (wtf do I need that for?) and it wouldn't charge. I didn't take the time to figure out how to make it work without the light -- I just patched it into the old harness to get it running. But from what I have heard, you can't just short it to ground or +12V and get it to work.
I can experiment with it and the wiring diagrams a little if you need me to.
OH -- BTW, mine puts out ~70A at idle, and 105A at 6000 alternator RPM.

I bought mine at Advance b/c of the lifetime warranty. There were a few at the boneyard, but they were all rebuilts or had been sitting in the rain.
Just about any Ford Taurus 86ish - 91 will have them. Ford E350 chassis vans will, too. I saw some in mid-80s Ford P/U with the diesel or the 460 as well.
If you find an alt that's about the size of the tranny in your zuk and weighs 50#, it's probably what you're looking for. :D
Oh, and look at that weldunator page in the other thread. He has the wire colors for the zuk harness. THIS DIAGRAM (http://users.superford.org/ylobronc/documents/chargingdiagram.gif) might help too.

leave the tracker alt on and make brackets to run a second externally regulated alt. that way if you screw up on the install it does not jack with your tronics. having 2 alts is better than one espcially on the trail if 1 goes out wire up the other.
