What front axle would be a good swap into a 2wd s-10 thats being converted to 4wd using a 231TC. I'm looking to run 36 or 37" tires.

How long will the stock 7.625 locked last with a 4cyl (5spd)making between 150-210hp with these tires (i have an extra set of shafts and two sets of spider and side gears if necessary)

After that I'll swap with something else maybe toy axles

Haven't decided on whether to use leafs or coils but leaning towards coils

I'd go with a set of Toyota axles, or Scout dana44s. They would hold up to the tire you specified, and parts are everywhere, especially for toy axles.

What side drop T-case? If its driver side drop your only feasible options are a RC44 from a bronco or F150/F250 or a D30 from a TJ/XJ/ZJ

I would personally go for the D44. You can get one from a 3/4 Ford that came factory with leaf spring instead of the 1/2 ton coils

Swap that rear end while you are there. If you go with the D44 you can get a matching 9" for the rear. Perfectly strong in the 31 spline big bearing version.

He's converting a 2wd to 4wd. Any narrower axles will work. I mentioned Toyota, because of the closeness in width to the newer S-10. If he uses a divorced case, the possibilities are endless of what he could use. With the vehicle in mind, and assuming he's on a limited budget (who isn't), Toy axles would be the best axle for the buck.

driverside drop I guess I need to start looking for some axles. Are toy front axles strong enough for 36"?

Toyota front axles are pass side drop.

i personally would use a toy case in that conversion, more parts, cheaper, last longer, etc. I have seen it done before, but have no clue how.

Well I have a line on a real cheap d30 or maybe this axle

The width of the axle is: 66" from "WMS" (wheel mounting surface) to "WMS" and 49" from the weld on the shaft housing by the knuckle to the other weld on the other side. It has flat top knuckles, and is out of a '76 to '79 Dodge Ram 1/2 ton.

Miles unknown, gear ratio unknown, Has Disc brakes and needs to be turned with new pads, and there are no lockouts.

I already have the tc so next up is the front axle

Probably stick with 33's until i can replace the rear axle so its going to be awhile not until I get my daily driver up and running

Anyone know of somewhere to pickup a yoke of somekind for the input of the tc other than entirely custom I already have a place that said they can do it.

there is a reason that axel is real cheap. It is weak as fawk. Your better off with D44 or toy axel. I like toy oaxels but in an S-10 I would go D44 (i saw a pair in 4-sale for $200) That is what I would do

why are there a bunch of toy and dodge owners in the chev section recommending axles??

driverside drop = early bronco front 44
a dana 30 is a POS even jeeper break them,
you would be wasting your time to even look at a 30
run the EB axle and suspension

80 and up Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer 44 front. be careful thoush, as some 83 and 84 versions had a centered vaccum diconnect (in the centersection, NOT the long tube like most other disconnects).

It's driver's drop and the centersection is offset more (to driver''s side) than the EB 44 (which is definitely centered more, sometimes this causes clearance issues with exhaust/pans etc.)

This 44 is a common swap for jeeps.........has 6* caster stock vs. the Scout 44 which has 0*.

i have just what you need,,a d44 out of a (not sure what year, but early 80s) wagoneer. i was going to put it in my friends 96 s10,,but he sold the truck. it is the perfect width. i have it stripped down to just a bare housing with no gears or knuckles. ill take 150 bucks if you want it
