Does anyone know of some off road rallys in the Western States that would require off road skills as well as gps , map and compass skills. The only two I know of are the Nevada Trophy with a $300 entry fee. this one sounds like it would be great. the other is new , called the Cali Trophy. This one sounds good but know gps however little to no entry fee.
I think it would be great to see Toyota or Jeep put one of these on. Maby even Cal 4 could do something like this.
What do you all think?

well, FWIW, with the rallies i've been involved with -- think ricers and dirt roads -- as a "sweep" rig (course clearing and vehicle extraction) needing to use GPS is just useless distraction. the codriver already has enough on his mind without all that techno-wizard shit. in other words, regardless of whether or noto you need to use GPS in a rally, you'll still have a helluva time. :smokin:

Looks like that Cali Trophy is more of a Camel Trophy navigational event...which is fine by me. I emailed the guy starting it, no word back yet on whether or not he's interested in having other vehicles other than rover in it. But if they do decide to let others in, I'd like to participate. Who knows, maybe this is the start of something...

Team Trophy Challenge might interest you. We participated in 99 & 2000 in Oregon. Had a blast. I believe they are not having one this year in Oregon but there is one in Washington.

If you're looking to get involved in the rallies you may have issues getting into anything more than the Nevada Trophy or, if they'll let you, the Cali Trophy as a driver in your normal truck. Rally USA runs some west coast rallies that are pretty fun to spectate, but it's mainly Subarus, Lancers and other normal rally cars, but there's some cool oddball stuff like Rangers, Range Rovers, and 911s, but you need a real race car in order to run. There's also assloads of desert racing to check out all over the southwest, just hook up with a team or an organizer to run chase or sweep, I use my GPS skills and radio constantly out there.

I thought about taking the Rover up north for the Cali Trophy, but decided to wait for next year to see how it goes and what the deal is. Not sure that it'll add up to much more than a trail run where you wheel without your buddies as they go around the trail on their own, then meet up at camp. I could be wrong, and hope I am because the event has a lot of potential. I also hope they open it up to more than just Rovers, mixed trail runs are a hell of a lot better than limiting it to a certain brand.

The Team Trophy Challenge, Cali Trophy and Nevada Trophy are all the kind of events I am interested in. they all sound great.
I have been in touch with the Cali Trophy originator and he says it is open to other vehicles. Due to a death in the his family the date has been postponed but will be reschedualed when he returns from Europe.
It looks to me like there could be a Challenge circuit set up like one of the Rock Crawling circuits and it could be more user friendly to the average 4 wheeler. If it was filmed and promoted properly it could sell a lot of products, from camping to repair to navigation and purpose built vehicles. Also I think a lot of R @ D could be done by equipment manufactures.
I think it has the potential to become a very family friendly and educational off road event.

I've been wanting to do an adventure 4x4 rally here in New Mexico for years. I have put on a few Mud Bog events, and am dabbling in mild rock crawling/trail riding.
They used to do the Safari Triathalon way back when, and that always looked fun.

we have 4 team spaces left open for our event the 1st weekend in October.
if it comes off as good as last year should be an exhausting blast. we have kept the entry fee down to attract teams and we are sponsored by Trail Ready. check it out, sign up and come play!

rlwjaw - thanks for the update, sorry to hear that he lost someone close.

I've got so much crap going on right now it looks like I won't even be able to make it to the Unimog meet, so I don't know if I should even be looking at other events :D

No problem I was just passing on info that I found here- http://nclrclub.org/forum/showthread.php?t=389 .
I know what you mean about things going on. I will be gone on an adventure all of august. Then MC Round up in september. I would really like to go to the event in Washington but I dont think it would go over well with the wife.
If the Cali- trophy fits my schedual I will at least try to be a spectator.
Right now I am thinking the Nevada Trophy for 2009 is a real posibility for us.
I have made a few mods since this picture but this is what I drive.
