: v8 swap ?'s cooling problems
luv2krawl 07-24-2002, 06:00 PM my buddy just put a 283 in his zuke he has no room for a radiator.
anybody know a website that has info on the swap or somewhere to call? he currently is running 3 radiators an still gets hot.
Any info
thanks tony
High5 07-24-2002, 07:46 PM 3 rad's????? what are the radiators out of? if they are not designed to flow enough to handle the flow of the v8 then it will cause it to over heat. get a big radiator out of a rig that came equipped with a v8 and mount it in the back of the rig with GOOD electric fan setup. the electric fans you can buy off the shelf at your local parts store will not work good enough to keep a health v8 cool.
Shrock 07-24-2002, 08:27 PM or he could try this:

Not exactly clean, but supposedly it worked. 400cid V8

350 Samurai 07-24-2002, 09:09 PM I'm using a Griffin that is narrow enough that it fits between the frame rails.
I got it from Summit for $189. It's kind of expensive, but I have friends that have spent much more than that just experimenting with different junkyard radiators.
Plus it's aluminum.
0ILBURNER 07-25-2002, 06:02 AM Tube the front end & put a V8 radiator up front w/ dual elec. fans. Just move the grille forward enough to clear & call it good.
Or just pull the engine out & put it in a Jeep
(there is enough room under the hood for a V8);)
ManglerYJ 07-25-2002, 07:49 AM There might be enough room in a Jeep for a V8 and a radiator, but there's still airflow issues to deal with.... trust me, I know!
I run a 3 core Chevy Conversion radiator for my 305 TPI motor, and run a mechanical Flex fan on the motor and an aftermarket electric fan in front of the rad. It keeps cool at highway speeds, but crawling still gets hot.
One thing you have to worry about by mounting the rad in the back seat is that you may need to put an inline electric waterpump somewhere in the plumbing to keep the motor driven waterpump from cavitating on steep hill climbs.
Matt (soon to join the Suzuki crowd... guess I'm gonna need a new handle on here!)

Good thing itīs aluminum. Keeps the weight down!!!:flipoff2: :D :flipoff2:
Anybody got pics of what a V8 looks like stuffed in a Zuk??????

I don't think you can "stuff" a V8 under the hood. My friend Erik had to lengthen his front clip/hood by a bit to get it all in there. I have pictures of the motor somewhere at home, I'll try and post them tommorow. Here's a good shot (http://www.azrockcrawler.com/_images/2002/7-02sqzrock/Dcp_3192.jpg) showing the length of the hood.

That guy is a magician or he knows where to get a bigger shoehorn than the one that I used. :D
I ended up with a 9" extension on my hood. I could have gotten away with less, but I said what the hell, since I had to lengthen it anyway, I might as well get a little extra.
Here's to ya Shrock!
luv2krawl 07-25-2002, 08:16 PM just so every one knows He did get the smallblock to fit under the stock clip. although his water pump hits the grill. He origionally had the idea of 2 radiators mounted above the wheelwells but when it did not cool he plumbed the third radiator (a alum sprint car model) with an electric fan under the body. still did not work. he tried running an electric water pump then manual waterpump.
If I learn how to download pics I will show you guys his creation
P.S. he does have a hole in the hood( a 5 inch air cleaner sticks out though:D
Shrock 07-25-2002, 08:42 PM Just for the record, that's not my rig. I believe the magic comes rom how low the engine is mounted. Plenty of room to drop it since that thing is over 5ft tall at the door sill.
