From the XKS.COM catalog:
Oxygen Sensor, thru 1995, 2 req’d RVR-ERR6729
Oxygen Sensor, 1996-on, 4 req’d RVR-ERR1834
Oxygen Sensor with Advance Evaporative Loss, 4 req’d RVR-AMR6244
So, which is needed for a 1997 DI? What the hell is "Advance Evaporative Loss". What 1996-on models does it apply to?
Thanks,
Tom

Here is the parts manual, check out part 26 on the page. It lists the three different types.

1996 on means 1996 and later, that's when they went to the 4.0 which has 4 O2 sensors.

Tom-
Check and see if your rig has either a round or square charcoal canister. Round canisters are non-advanced evaps, and square canisters are advanced-evpas.
If you are non-evaps, don't buy the err1834, order the err1834k instead. They are half as much.
Hope this helps,

Thanks, that is exactly what I needed to know.
Would there be any ill-effects for using the wrong ones? So many places are selling a "generic" brand that is a 4 wire O2 sensor.

Tom-
I don't forsee any problems with retro-fitting an aftermarket sensor. We do them very frequently on older classics because the sensors are so expensive. Just a little more labour intensive, but really not a big deal at all. Just don't go cheap and quick. ie.. solder your connections and use heat shrink to adapt the factory plug(s) from your old sensor(s) to new ones.
I think that NGK makes the universal ones we fit to classics....

Which ever way you go, remember that 96 and later GEMS Discos need 4-wire heated sensors - not the 3-wire units. That's one of the reasons for the big diff in $$$.

Yeah, I have the four wire ones, but they didn't fit into the socket on my truck. So, I can either cut them and spend the time soldering, or send back for some ones that fit right up.
The confusing part is the big difference in price between the Evaporative loss 4 wire and the regular 4 wire.
