I just threw a cage together for my buddy this past week. I used 1 1/4 schedule 40 pipe. Burnt the shit out of my arm in the process.

looks like someone leaned on the cage while welding it !

I had to cut and sleeve a piece and after we welded it i grab on a cool spot and test fit it. As i put it up there the top flopped over towards me and i put my arms outso it didnt hit me in the head and the freshly welded spot landed on my arm. Hurts now but wasnt bad when it happened. Didnt really hurt until about an hour afterwards.

What did you use to bend it?

I don't know about you, but my turds are bigger than 1 1/4 pipe!

Nice lines on that cage! Sucks about your arm - been there done that! (well not that bad)

youve got a big ANUS, 1 1/4'' pipe is 1 5/8'' OD

Grind a 1/4 off each one of the rollers so there is more of a contact point on the pipe when bending. It help to avoid the dent that the roller tends to give on a decent bend. Also on what ever shoe you use on the bottle jack grind the ends of it so the there isnt a shrp edge.......make it kinda flow off the edge nicely so tha on a sharp bend the shoe doesnt kink the pipe on each end of the shoe. Plus we welded it to a piece of 4x4 tubing about 3 feet long and then welded it to a chevy truck wheel so there is no more bending over while bending the pipe.

They make a prescription cream called Silvadene(sp?) that works awesome on burns. My cousins husband works in the ER and keeps me stocked up on it.

It stops the hurtin' and keeps it from scaring. I got second degree burns from my wrist to my arm pit last year from a flash fire.

arm looks yummy. I did something similar, but more stupid once. I welded on a pipe, then reached right over it on the bench for something on the other side, and just layed my wrist right on it. looked a lot like yours....

thanks for info on modifying the harbor freight pipe bender, I was thinking of using mine for a cage, too...

Tip 1. Use mustard on burn immediately, and it won't blister. Tip 2. Use Bacitracin now. Off the shelf at Wal-Mart.:p

I burned my entire forearm a few years ago. Was working on the truck (with engine running) and propped myself up by putting my forearm against the exhaust stack. Needless to say it wasn't pretty. I had a blister the size of an avocado on my arm for a week afterwards.:shaking:

Cage looks good, really good for pipe! :flipoff2:

I'd like to see the bender mods too. I don't know If I'll be making bends like that any time soon, but It would be good to know the tool I'm using is capable of it. I keep crimping the pipe, part is user error, but I was pretty sure the bender was partially at fault.

Burnt my wrist like that a while back. I got it too close to the header. I didn't actually touch the header with my skin, but it got close enough that the oil in my skin snapped like butter on a hot skillet. Had a 2 inch patch of skin just explode off my wrist. Weirdest damn burn I ever had. Keep lots of antibiotic on that wound. Getting an infection is real easy with that much of your dermis exposed.

Ok here are the easy mods to make this bender work better.

The flat spot leave more surface on the roller to form the bend. The way that bender works without that roller mod dents the pipe pretty quick. You could even grind more out than what i did. If you plan on making shrper bends I would recommend you grind more out.

Dawn die?

When I built my cage on my big truck, I put a blue paper shop towel in the die before laying the pipe in there. It helped keep the deformation down.

I also put the rollers out near the ends.

Hey what if you made new rollers that had a deeper radius and fit the exact size pipe you were bending. Think it would work?

roczuk
07-11-2008, 03:44 PM
yes that would work. if you went thru the trouble of machining some. incorporate the ends with some rollerbearings from a skate board or some bearings that would match the OD of the pin from the bender. Mcmaster has many bearing choices. You'd be surprised at how it bends with no deformation.

To keep the rollers from denting the pipe on mine. I took a 4 inch long piece of the next larger size pipe split it long ways. I put it between the rollers and the pipe I was bending.

x2. I have googled 'Dawn die' everywhichway and I cannot find anything helpful.

Link? Anyone? Description? Anyone?

Nice work to the OP, also. And that red one up a little ways from here too.
