I ahve a zena power welder and I have a air cond. compressor I want to put on my 7M supra engine. I had both on my 22re but was a bitch having to put the belt on the welder when I needed it. So I am gonna put air or welder where the AC pump goes. Which would be better? I am thinking welder on engine and buy a Power tank. But what would you guys do?

Well...... I need air every time I go wheelin, and honestly...... I've have yet to "need" a welder. But I know my day is coming. I bet you can figure a way to get both!

Besides, in a jam you can always hook a couple batteries together.

i too think air is more important.......well atleast needed more often on the trail than a welder. that being said do what you can to have both. if you do decide on an underhood welder definatly get the power tank.

put the welder back in!
Not having air can be a bummer, but walking home would be even worse

I had to make the same choice a few years ago. Went with the
belt driven welder and bought a Powertank....got both!

I setup my welder alternator with a couple of rod ends so I could
easily install the belt in a few minutes when needed.

I agree, get the welder under there and just go to a welding suply store and get a catalyna gas cylinder and a cheap regulator.

I run air tools, air up, reseat beads.

And although the bitch is way heavy, I can carry it farther than a truck with ac air. :flipoff2:

The only problem with a on-board welder is that you are always working on peoples shit when you go to camp.

Everyone is drinking beer and cooking and your ass is out in the field welding someones crap back together!

It is one thing to help out a buddy in distress, but I know of guys who have gotten woken up at night and asked if they could go rescue some drunk that wrecked his stuff on a night run!

I say get a 110 Mig and a small bottle....easier to loan out and it must stay in camp versus loaning out your rig.....

I did air first! Just this year i started welding on the trail.....So i will be adding a welder too.

But if you have the option to go both...do it......But instead of a power tank try a 12v Extreme Air compressor...with a tank...http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?s=&postid=636325

Ok, here's what you do....

Install the onboard welder, run some electrical lines to a v-belt electric motor, then have the alt/weldanator run the electric motor which will power the air compressor with a v-belt...
You can get a motor from a old swamp cooler

You can mount the motor and the pump onto a flat surface of wood, make the unit portable, with an ext cord.

now you have the best of both worlds:D

Don't tell people you have a welder :D

Go for the welder, evey serious rig out there, like 9 out of 10 have air you can use, but only about 1 out of 50 have an welder, so its harder to find someone to weld up your junk

What about welding your own junk? Is that ok to do? What about FI computers? I watched someone weld Brandon's spring purch with one battery and a hand held deal. Seemed cool to me. I have neither but I like the discussion. :D I was thinking OBA and that battery deal. I wish I could remeber what type it was. He said it was about $300 ish.

Yah AIR comes in handy.. but the thing about a welder, is when you do need one you REALLY need one.

Just get them both but dont tell anyone you have the welder.

Ya beat me to it. The Century is a sweet setup.

Go with one of these and you can have your on-board air(w/compressor) AND
an on-board welder that is more mobile also.
When you're awakened(or interupted) at 3:00am, you can trade them your portable welder for their credit card and get back to business:D ...Better than getting up, or handing some clown your keys....

I have used that welder at least a dozen times on the trail. None of those times was on my own rig. That is what I get for having a toyota and hanging out with guys with jeeps :flipoff2:
