This is a simple kit that takes a np231 Transfer case and makes a low cost crawl box out of it, It uses the front half of a NP231 case that you provide and in about a hour or so of work you can have a crawl box that will lower your gearing by 2.73 to 1 ...
Just take a 231 case with the right input spline count to fit your trans output
(21 or 23 spline for the jeep guys) and (27 spline for the GM guys) and pull it apart , lay the big plate on the front casting and mark it about 1/2 inch "PAST" the left edge of the plate and cut it there, then file or grind the block off plate that comes in the kit to fit where you cut it off. Next tig weld the block off plate to the front casting, And thats it!

Its just that simple to make a crawl box ( doubler ) out of a np-231

All of the parts are made in house on CNC equipment
The plates are made from 6061-T6 alum and we make all are shafts out of 4340 cromo steel then through harden them.

the 231 crawl box and a D300 comes to the same length as a "stock" 231 with the slip yoke. I have has some guys say its 1/4" shorter and others say it 1/4" longer . Lets face it its a slip yoke were you slide it to well change.

As for the D300 flip sticks I make there for this crawl box setup. Well a lot of guys just run a flipped Dana 300 with out the crawl box and they work and fit up for that setup to.

I still have a few of the 241 drivers drop setups in stock. There the same as the 231 only the big plate is larger. and I have a few 32 spline shafts on the shelf to go with them.

All you have to do is bore the back side of the "rear" shifter rail for a seal and make a new shiter shaft out of 3/4" drill rod. I have been using W1 steel
it runs about $20 for a 3 foot chunk,

I well sell of the last few 241 kits I have on the shelf for $475 + $15 shipping

I don`t know what setup your looking at 231-231 or a 231-D300 setup
but 90% of the guys run a D300 setup flipped or non flipped.

What I have done and it works out great is build a plate that comes of the back side of the D300 thats hooked to the front output steel cover and to a couple of the bolts on the rear tail housing then put a plate under the crawl box up to the stock tail housing mount.
then just run a mid 70`s GM np-203 stockT case mount under it to a X member

( The trick with T case mounts is to remimber that when you stick torque
to the rig it trys to push the T case thrue the floor)
so run a simple strap over the T case to keep it from pulling the mount apart.

There is no simple way to run a D18 /D20 type T case with this setup do to the input gear is held by the output shaft of the trans or the tail housing with that T case setup.

h some screwing around I think one could use a tailhousing off a TH400 to D20 setup and make there "OWN" adapter to go to the big plate.
I do stock the 32 spline shafts that you would need to go from the crawlbox to the th400 tailhousing.

The TH400/ D20 was used in a ton of the 1970`s Waggys.

the few 241 kits I have left are for a drivers drop 241 case, I don`t know It one can just flip them over and tap out the oil holes from the other side to use with a pass drop 241 case or not.

but finding a used driverd drop 241 case should be easy and cheap.

how does the shifter work.....I got an MJ standard cab...gonna run aw4..got any pics? As of right now...the drive shaft is long enough I don't need the SYE kit with 5.5 inches of lift....do you know if this would change if I put one of these in?

Duffy, I bought a 231/231 kit last year and I have a grinding noise that sounds like its coming from the cases when I let off the gas at highway speeds. Is this common?

What is the length of the 231 front box and your adapter? Basically how much longer is the drive train?

Unless something has changed with the adapters, the 231J front half is 6 7/8", the block off plate is 1/2", and the clocking ring is 1/2", total length of 7 7/8".

I called and ordered a 21 spline kits about 3 weeks ago he said he had one left in stock. But 3 weeks have passed and nothing from him. Called a bunch and left messages but no returned calls. I as well dont wanna bother him but would like my money back or my part!

I am having a similar problem. Ordered 3 weeks ago over the phone, said it was in stock, but hasn’t shipped. I have talked to him a few times since, and always seems to have a genuine excuse. Now his voicemail is full, and he’s not answering his shop phone.

I ordered a NP241 kit to Dana 300 and a Dana 300 twin stick kit.

He charged my card the night I ordered.

He is a great guy to talk to, and I understand his issues with a small operation. I will keep trying to contact him.

EDIT: From reading other threads - 1-3 weeks is about normal for his "in stock" parts.

I have had the kit for over a year- I swore I would install it as soon as my stock 231D grenaded. It took a while- it actually died when I landed the full weight of rht etruck on the driveshaft... anyway- great kit- easy to install. The shifters took a little thinking, but I was able to modify a pair of Dodge Ram 1500 shifters (BTW- this is in a Dodge Ram 1500).

here is a pic of my 231/205. the 231 is flipped for more shift rail clearance and the 205 is almost flat. shifter handles are done, jsut waiting to put them on till I get the doubler in the truck. I will get some more pics this weekend of the notch in the 231 for the rear output shift rail.

he only makes a clocking rings for a 6 bolt pattern, a chevy 231 out of a s10 or blazer has a 5 bolt pattern you need a 6 bolt pattern to work with his kit i know this cuz i wanted to do 2 np 231c he said i would need the front case half of a jeep case bolted to rear half of the 231 c to make it work.So, sorry kind of new to this, but could you just drill out the 5 holes needed for the chev.231? is that the only problem? splines the same?I have several jeep 231's kicking around just wanted the chev in back because I hear they are a little stronger.:confused:

I called the number on madroosters website, called it a lot actually after giving up on calling Duffy numerous times, and finally giving up once his voicemail became full (and is still full I might add) but I got ahold of a guy named Phil, was super nice and said he was still making kits, I made the mistake of not ordering one then... now I cant get ahold of him again...

I got a hold of Duffy yesterday and talked to him for a few minutes. He is very knowledgeable and answered all the questions I had.

He said he was currently out of 231 plates, but had just picked up the 1/2" aluminum sheets and thought he would be able to get them on the mill in about 2 weeks. So I put my name down for two kits. Probably am going to order a few clocking rings as well.

I guess as soon as they become available again I need to pony up and buy one even though I won't be building until next winter. :shaking:

I was skeptical at purchase,

But was ecstatic at delivery.

Product is phenomenal for the price. assembles wonderfully, everything seats perfect, and it looks just as clean as a postcard.

Customer service can be a little MIA at times but when you get him on the phone, he does what he says he is going to do.

As soon as I get the harness plugged into the engine, I will abuse the kit a little bit and see how it holds up.

The only thing to keep in mind is that you will have to find someone to weld the filler plate onto the 231. Its cast aluminum so the guy needs to be somewhat skilled. Also, make sure that whoever does it puts a nice clean smooth sealing edge where the plate is attached to the cut-off case. It will help tremendously in sealing it up.

2. It's flipped completely upside down... does this matter for lubeing?

A lot of people run ATF in the doublers.
You only flip the whole thing upside down if you want to run a driver drop 300.
NWF makes a cable shifter kit for this setup....Duffy also makes his own shifters for the flipped case and the non flipped case. On the 231 you are on your own.

if your running on the street use ATF it cools a lot better than gear lube.
for the 231 shifter just use a B&M auto shift cable.

look at this cable shifter setup, i made mine based off timmay's and it turned out really good. shifts smooth every time. mcmaster carr sells 4 ft cable shifters with 1/4-28 threads on both. then go to local hardware store and buy clevis yokes to join them.

I was in a comp last weekend, beat on the 231/205 harder than I have ever beat on my rig in the past and it held up great. great product!

I've got a 1988 Jeep Comanche that I put a 3.2L Nissan Diesel out of a 1980 Scout. It's got the T19 4spd tranny, and a dana 300 transfercase. I want to use the NP231 from the Comanche as the reduction box up to the T19.

My question is will your kit work with the novak adapter kit to put the NP231 to the T19 or do you have your own kit for mounting the box4rocks to the T19? I've also been told that I can't use the IH dana 300 and I need one from a Jeep??

off hand I don`t know if the novak kit used a 23 spline output shaft in the kit or if they use a new input for the 231. at any rate there kit well work to adapt to the 231 case it well work fine, and yes you well need to run a jeep D300. the scout case have a the old bolt pattern mounting like the D300

The upside is the scout D300 case is worth "WAY" more $$$ than the jeep cases .

duffy, can you put one of your 231 doubler kits on a stak 2speed? If so is there anything I need to consider that may cause a problem..they are quite like a d300 but larger.

You weld it in yourself or take it to someone and have them weld it in.

do dont have a welder to weld aluminum and ive never mess with a doubler before i just left them single

So I've called probably 10 times, and never got an answer. Left a message twice (about 2 weeks apart) with the words "cash in hand ready to order but have a few questions first" and never received a call back. Don't know what more I can do to let to let you know I'm serious........

I doubt Duffy will ever view this topic again. Best bet is to order from Ebay or "ask seller a question." I got mine within a week of order, great stuff. Be sure to use the correct phone number when you call him, it has changed recently.

Far as I know he does not. I don't think the smaller input would be a good idea in a doubler anyway, the 23 spline is small enough considering the torque flowing through it!

Besides, isn't a 241J the rock trac? That would have a 23 spline input.

Where did you find those!? I've been looking forever and I can't find them anywhere.

I'm running a TeraFlex 4:1 modded J231 in my 4cyl XJ. You don't make 21spline midshafts anymore because of strength concerns. What TC would you combine in front of or behind the TF 4:1 to have a good doubler combination in the XJ. Would a 23spline 2:73 NP231 hold up behind it or would the 4:1 in front be too much. Is the 4:1 in the front going to be problematic all around?

I have lots of the 23 spline kits back in stock.

Awesome, count me in for a 241 kit to a ford 205

i have the np321/dana 300 set up, and i have the 23 spline shaft between the 2, i dont plan on doing anything crazy to my engine, but if it hits 350 hp 400 tourqe would the 23 spline shaft between the np231 crawl-box and the dana 300 be able to take that much power? i kinda have a heavy foot. if not i need to buy a different splined shaft from you Duffy. any info would be much appreciated.

That is the same setup that i have [duffy built] with a 4:1 in the rear case also , running 44" TSLs on the wrangler and it kicks ASS! seems pretty strong as well...........:)

I really like NWFs Black Box but would like to not have to pay 1600 when I've got alot of the parts... Considering I already need a new front driveshaft at the moment.

May be easier to change the input on the back 231 to 23 spline. Then you can get the the kit sooner. only add a few bucks to the project. Just a thought. Thats basically what I did with mine.

I realize you rarely supply the planetary sets but are there any sets that offer a higher ratio than a 2.72? I figure combined with my stock 300 gears it'll be too low.

I was thinkin something in the 1.5-2.0 range? this way the combo would get me around 4-5:1 in double low?

I got a 203 range box and the adapter to my trans but it's too long of a unit for my application...... doin a 231 with my 300 gives me virtually the same ratio either way and stupid lo with both engaged......

Hey got my kit couple days ago worked on paper not in reality... had to redrill trans adapter to clock the 231 180 degrees to fit the D300 behind it this created clearence issues on the tunnel... removed the 231 machined off the long tail by the blockoff plate.. moved the bolt ear that was cut off.. rewelded that ear above the spring detent and drilled duffys plate for the new ear gained almost 2" clearence and so far it works no leaks!!! :jeep3:

The 32 and 31 spline shafts are going out to heat treating next week. sorry for it taking some time to get them back into stock but as a one man shop I have to keep the main products in stock and work on the slower selling ones when I get time.

I've been running one of the BW 1350/54 doublers in a full width, solid axle explorer for 2 years now, it's friggin awesome. Well worth the money.
