: Building a 350 for Torque
PA-XJ2 07-06-2008, 03:41 PM Hey, i have a 90 XJ that im putting a 350 in (its not going to be on the road trail only) and i wanna rebuild the motor i have (out of a Monte Carlo) for torque, anyone one of any kits that will work or ideas how to do this.
Thanks PA-XJ2
cj8scrambld 07-06-2008, 03:50 PM For an easy TQ gain....drop in a 3.75" stroke crank...(400 sbc crank). IMO, that is the easiest way to gain "free" TQ.....via stroke.....stroke = leverage.
PA-XJ2 07-06-2008, 04:32 PM cool thanks man, now for what trans to run, 700r4 or a turbo 400.
PA-XJ2
r0nin89 07-06-2008, 05:30 PM Turbo 400 for trail only.
Grumpy_old_fart 07-07-2008, 12:08 AM want torque?
use this crank... (http://www.competitionproducts.com/prodinfo.asp?number=CS454-1)
Bubba_Jeep 07-07-2008, 07:45 AM Don't think that crank will work in a 350.

That's the point. If you want torque go Big Block:flipoff2:

700 all the way!
But I like and wheel 700's.
400 if you have to, but the low gear sucks, same in a 350.
GMCTruxrule 07-07-2008, 12:31 PM 350 has a lower first gear 2.52, 400 is 2.48

I would but i really dont wanna move the fire wall to fit one and i have a 350. and now my trans option just got bigger ok so a turbo350 turbo400 or a 700r4, anyone know the 1st gear ratio of the 700? i checked out that crank shaft, what size motor is that out of and why is it so cheap(im not complaining that i may get to same some money its just a new thing to me when it comes to building jeeps!) i found cranks from a 400ci for about $640.

The other stuff I don't know but a 700R4 has a 3.06:1 first gear. It is the deepest of the 3 you posted.

IMO, if your building a 350/383 for TQ and trail use....there is no need to go with a crazy high dollar crank as the rpm for TQ use will be some what limited to sane rpm's that even a stock 400 crank will survive in. That is a sweet crank Grumpy posted....and pretty reasonably priced too. But, I think a standard low rpm 383 TQ build would work fine in an XJ...what are you thinking your running for weight?
b454rat 07-08-2008, 09:05 AM 350 .030 over, Vortec heads, Xtrme 268 cam, 9-ish:1 CR, Performer intake, 750 carb, good headers and 2 1/2" duals or big single exhaust. Good for 400 horse.
Here is one article: http://compcams.com/Community/Articles/Details.asp?ID=1751487810
Did some reading, not quite 400 horse, but plenty for what you need....
PA-XJ2 07-08-2008, 02:56 PM weight i have no idea yet im just getting started on this jeep, all i have left to do is pull the motor trans and t-case and then shes waiting for all "new". im hopeing for under 5000.
RockZJ311 07-08-2008, 03:07 PM Sounds like you have a plan! Dont know much about building motors but with you doing this I will learn as well. The guys on here are super helpful and know their stuff so its a great place to get info!

I've seen on T.V somewheres about putting a B.B crank in a small block. Pretty sure it was a CORR event( cuz there spec's are limited). Not sure the amount of machining and doubt the block was stock castin. Not sure could be wrong but anythings possible. See what i can find

this is about what im running in a full size chev- 350 .060 over 9-1 comp. weiand intake, truck cam- im fairly happy with it, wish i would have upped the comp. because its a play truck, and gas is already so expensive whats a couple more dollars for the hp/ torque the higher comp. would have gained.
preaty cheap to build around 2k all new parts
i wish i had just gone with a big block for the torque thou my.02 the small block has run out of steam on some hill climbs.
-no replacement for displacement
good luck with your build
PA-XJ2 07-10-2008, 06:33 PM hey, anyone have an idea how much it would cost to have the cyl. bored. the shop that was down the road from my college was 25 per cyl(this was up in east windser CT) was that a good price or to high?
