Water Removal

Just wondering? I read in a magazine about they Aussie challenge. One of the things that caught my eye was that they were using some sort of pump or bilge pump to remove water from the interior of the vehicle. Blows me away! Never woulda thought of it myself. Anyone out there doing this and what kinda pump are you using? Obviously 12v but what brand and where do I get one?

Interesting idea, but would removeable rubber plugs in the floor be a bit easier and quicker?

Very true, after your out of the water. But during your fording, a pump would be nice to keep the water level down.

I remember reading about them using those about 10 years ago. I found the the hydraulic winches they used with a PTO pump and an electric back up pump a bit more interesting.

All depends on how much of a problem you have with water coming in as to whether it was worth it to you.

Head down to the local marine shop and just buy a 12V bilge pump. Chances are that they have more experience with such things than your average 4Wheeler. :)

A good bilge pump will flow about 1000 gal/hour. About as much as a 5/8 water hose at your house. If you leak faster than that, you need to plan accordingly. A pto driven water pump can flow 1000 gal/15 +/- min. There are bigger ones, but you really don't want to go there for this application.

I'd think you would be better off waterproofing as much as possible then go from there.

No way any 12v bilge pump is going to do a damn thing if you've got water pouring in. As was said, drain plugs are a much better idea. That, or not going in water that's at cab level.
Those brits and aussies do some weird shit though. It seems like most of the comps involve getting stuck and racing with winches...?

I guess my idea of wheeling wouldn't be driving down the trail and finding a deep creek, and saying, "well, that looks cab deep, guess we'll turn back." I have the rubber plugs in the floor of my sambo, i have fully explored that concept, just thought the bilge pump thing was pretty interesting.

I've also thought that the bilge pump idea was a bit over the top. Generally you aren't going to be in deep water for long and guaranteed it will drain out quicker though the holes in the floor than a pump will get it out. I might be able to see it if you plan on driving around in flood water or something for long periods but then you better have a full military style fording kit with a pressurized drivetrain.

why not just completely seal the cab, and you wont have to worry about the water, or get a boat:D
