: Cut and lengthen Frame or move axle.
supasammi 07-07-2008, 11:50 AM I'm not happy with my current wheelbase and I am looking at lengthening it.
My Options:
Cut and lengthen then frame just behing the door, or.....
Replace the gas tank and move the axle farther back on the frame.
Anybody ever moved their rear axle farther back?
The only thing that I have not figured out is what to do for the leaf springs.
I am going to build a roll cage and I could extend it out the back a couple inches and mount the leafs to it.
Also,
I would like better travel but I don't have the money to go to coil overs. I was thinking about placing the leaf springs closer to the center of my axles. Would that work? Anybody tried it?
Go easy on me, Im just getting into this and this is my first wheeling rig.
Thanks!!!!
EHeye 07-07-2008, 12:26 PM Most people whack off the frame behind the seats and build a tube frame for lengthening. Or you could build off the back of the frame but it may not be very structural.
If you move your springs in, it will make for an unstable ride.
stoneyxj 07-07-2008, 03:03 PM move your springs in. (its not that unstable) jsut run good shox that will help a LOT!
are you running YJ's? your can mount the shackles off a rear bumper.
the only thing you will have to worry about is what to do with the fuel tank.
i know these arn't the best pix but thats what i ran all last year

supasammi 07-07-2008, 05:39 PM Right now I just have the stock springs but I am going to move those up to the front axle and run YJ's on the rear. How much farther in did you run you place your leaf packs?
stoneyxj 07-07-2008, 07:30 PM under the frame rails. and with some nice bilstien shox it wasn't too sloppy!
just make sure when you do that you line up the rear hanger also.
(i just lined mine up with the frame rail, which slants outward! OPPS!!)
i also ran stock yj's
buc4x 07-08-2008, 03:32 PM i run rears up front and xj's out back with the offset pin and the length you can gain about 6" in the rear, rear shackle is off the rear bumper. you will also have to raise your gas tank. my wheel base is right at 90"

olivedrabxj 07-08-2008, 03:41 PM my buddy runs xjs in the rear with the shackles mounted to the bumper he put them with the long side foward in the stock sammi spring hanger it works well but needs an anti wrap bar
slickrock209 07-09-2008, 08:04 PM I put xjs on the back of my sami, frame extension, plate, move gas tank, etc....Booty Fab but its still holdin togother :flipoff2: 92-93in wb

Going to put rangers/durango rear springs on anybody got some for sale?
stoneyxj 07-09-2008, 11:13 PM why would you extend the frame rail so far back if you don't mount the shackles back there??
seems like a waste of material. (and departure angle!)
slickrock209 07-10-2008, 09:19 AM I hear that alot, ive had the fucker standing just about straight up n down and havent hit that bumper.but anyways im

exo sami 07-10-2008, 07:38 PM it cost me 50$ to stretch my sami to 103 wb. it still needs sides finished.

sami-stine 07-10-2008, 09:24 PM i moved my axle back 25 inches. built onto the frame to do this. i think it to far but i do like the wheel base. i'm at 105 but on the wifes rig i will push the front more that the rear. hers will be tubed to start with so i will have more to choose from. hey look at ballistic fab there air shock is only 250 for a 14" shock you can do a three link for it for a nice price.

Can we a better pic of the frame rail extension. thanks ohh nice work
exo sami 07-11-2008, 03:03 PM I Stretched It 14" Rite In Front Of Rear Leafs, Fuel And Electrical
Are Easy, Driveline Has New Center Section.
The Frame Was Sleeved And Plated,it Rides Alot Better.
suzukiwarrior 07-11-2008, 05:47 PM not the best pic but 105 w/b http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z166/suzukiwarrior/DSC00048.jpg http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z166/suzukiwarrior/DSC03837.jpg
vhamacalvars 07-11-2008, 09:42 PM A guy at bent and twisted 4wd in Chico did a four link for the rear and used a set of stock tj springs mounted at the rear corners of the frame. It was a fairly simple set up but it gave him tons of flex. I wish I had some pix for you. He did the same for the front and had a 100+ wheelbase.
You should post your build once you get it rolling.
Why not make it adjustable! :smokin:

That was differnet, i would like to check that rig out alittle closer, but cool.
supasammi 07-12-2008, 12:56 PM Thanks for all the help guys. Right now I am running IROK 33's but I just bought a set of Kuhmo 35's so it looks like I am going to have to do some fender trimming as well as a rear axle swap (I have chromollys up front, thanks to Brent over at TRAILTOUGH!)
I am going to go with a Toyota 8" in the rear and I was thinking since I am going to be doing an axle swap anyways why not just move it backwards a little bit.
THE PLANS:
Swap out the rear springs for YJ springs which are shackled off of the rear bumper.
That ought to move the rear axle back about 8"
Rear springs are going to be moved inwards about 8" toward the differential
New shock setup as my newly placed springs are going to get in the way of the current shock mounts. I was thinking about running hoop up through the floorboard behind my second row of seats
I am going to start my build around Sept. 1st and I will start posting some pictures so you can see how it is going and give me some advice.
Anyone have pictures of their leaf springs moved closer towards the diff.?
If so I would like to see some and know how far in you moved them.

Just a heads up.....I was going to run a yota front axle and I couldn't find anyone that made a 6 on 5.5 to 5 on 5.5 wheel adapter so I ended up running a dana 44 with 5 on 5.5 instead. You might be able to get custom 5 on 5.5 shafts made for the rear though. It definitely wasn't an option for the front. I hope this helps.
sami-stine 07-13-2008, 09:26 AM dang wheels would be cheaper than custom shaft's dont you think. and if you got your D44 from a 70's fullsize jeep it would be the same 6 on 5.5 wheel as the toy stuff. but if you doing the swap do both the same gears are gut enough off the axles won't be spinning the same.
BlueMonkey 07-16-2008, 08:34 PM hey supasami.... I pushed your sami over on its side today and drove over it with the gt...........:)
supasammi 07-17-2008, 11:29 AM I hate you BLUEMONKEY, I HATE YOU!!!!:shaking:
supasammi 07-17-2008, 11:40 AM Scott410,
I really like your setup that you have. What are the specs? It looks like you moved the rear axles to, did you? Any more details and pics? I like your cage to, looks like i'm going to have to copy it....
BlueMonkey 07-28-2008, 12:09 PM Supasammi.. By the time you read this your rig should be at the shop... I would call them and get that list together asap so they dont take forever...
