My brother in-law's 1991 Jeep Cherokee needs a new fuel pump. I was wondering if there is an access hole in the floor, or if I have to drop the tank. The Jeep is about an hour away and I want to know what I am up against before I go out to replace the pump. Any help would be great.

I'm fairly sure you have to drop the tank. The pump is inside the tank. My son had a 93 Cherokee and the dealer quoted $700 to replace the fuel pump because they said they had to drop the tank.

Well, you could always do what they did to my YJ when the fuel pump took a dump. The guys I was with cut a hole in the bottom of the rear floor pan and pulled the fuel pump assembly up through it.

Even with the cutting, it took about 30 minutes to replace.

What he said - you could cut a hole! I would drop the tank and do it anyway, and cut an access hole with the tank out for future access/use. Put a flap on hinges to cover it up. As long as you do that, you are guaranteed not to ever need to access the pump again, because thats how these things go :D
