i just talked to the kid that invented clear-gearz diff covers i realized his shop is just down the street from me. you know the ones that are made of kevlar or something like that. i took a couple of wales on a cover with a 5lb sledge and i have to say that it was pretty stout. he has no plans to make a bumper to protect the ring gear but he claims that rock-crawlers are running a lot of them. he seems pretty confident in his product but i wouldn't run them rithout a rock ring and ring-gear guard like that of avalanche engineering fame.

I still don't understand why a clear diff cover is good.

Can I put lights inside my Diff at that point and make it all glow perty like?

Well it would be nice to be able to inspect the guts without dumping all the fluid out.....

I see some practical uses-
-if you go through water or mud, sometimes water will get in the gear oil, you could see it with the clear cover
-you can easily inspect the condition of your ring and pinion, I just tore apart a diff in which some of the bolts had fallen out of the ring gear, you would notice that right away with a clear cover
-I don't think it is a bad idea but I definitely see how these covers could fall into the wrong hands and be used to pollute the Rainbow Truck world.

the guy i talked to is a true blue pretty boy trucker. he claims up and down that they are so awesome but he has never wheeled before and he does not know what we do to our stuff!! he goes to the EJS every year but stays at tato-salad the whole time and never runs trails. neither do his buddies. they just like to hang out and party. whoop-di-doo!! tato-salad gets boring after an hour. anyways he was getting all excited that ranch from mepco/RCCA was trying some of them out. i say that is great and all but they still need a rock guard on there!! chipping ring gears is not cool!!

I could see them being useful on the trail or at a comp. It is one less cover you need to pull off to inspect your vehicle. If i was ever concerned about breaking a ring and pinion I would buy them.

What happens to the cover when you drag the diff across a jagged rock and removed material off it. What is the purpose when it gets scratched and hazed?

I made one for a 12 bolt (for my Camaro) back in 83 ouch... anyway that was out of plexiglass and the oil stained the plastic so you couldnt see inside anyway.
Maybe his doesnt stain.
