Rocking driveline back in forth with wheels in the air and trans & t-case in neutral. Does this sound normal.

I thought it was the back lash was out, because i recently swapped out a gov-loc carrier for a open carrier. I just swapped my old ring gear(4.11s) off my old gov-loc onto the new/open carrier and didnt touch the pinion.

So i dug into it a little deaper and the backlash is tight, because when i hold the pinion/d-line with my hand and rock the ring gear you can hear the backlash is pretty tight.

Every truck I've had theres a little play from the time you spin the shaft to when the pinion and ring catch each other.

Normal backlash should be almost indescernible...almost being the operative word. For a well worn set of gears, it will be more noticeable, but there should not be a very noticeable offset of play between pinion contacting drive and coast side of ring teeth.

I dont own a dial indicator, but you can see in the second video my hand/ring gear hardly moves.

hardly moves is a relative term and not adiquate for gear setups, unless you have done a lot of them.

sound like its too loose. just wait till you get a detroit and see the wheel/drive shaft slop then.

My 14 bolt SF has some play in the gears and goes ping, ping when you rotate the driveshaft back and forth.

I have recently replaced the spider gears , washers and side gears and pin due to the spider gears pitting which I found when I R/R axle seals. The ring and pinion looked perfect so I left them alone . It has 230K on it.

It seems to be noraml 14 bolt noises my buddy brought his truck over and it makes the same noise. Tryd it on a crawler w/ a 14 bolt seemed to do the same but worse with the detroit. Im going to run it.

Thanks

Please explain this.

Please explain this.

a detroit (or any auto locker for that matter) has a lot of slop in the engagement of the side gears (whatever you want to call them) so it takes quite a bit of driveshaft movement to take up that slop and get the wheels spinning.
