: New rant on rock crawling
FearMe 07-25-2002, 12:26 PM Ned's got his opinion here's mine.
I love to watch the event's, the rigs, drivers and spotters are terrific. What drives me nuts is all the standing around and waiting for something to happen (organization?).
A team will clear a course and it sometimes takes a half hour to get another team started. WTF's up with that? 5 minutes of action and then a circle jerk. There are sometimes three or more rigs staged at the start line, there has already been a drivers meeting and these guys are pro's that know what to do. Why not just get them moving?

whats wrong with the circle jerk ...err never mind
bigdude 07-25-2002, 12:41 PM In ERoCC you cannot start a course/obstacle until the rig behind you is present. Therefore they are afforded the same benefit of watching someone else that you had. If you are first then you get 3 minutes to walk the course before you have to run it.
If I'm 2nd and the 3rd guy is broken and can't get to the obstacle I'm ready to run, well then I have to wait for the 4th guy to get there or the 3rd guy to get fixed.
If there is someone behind you in ERoCC and no one on the course ahead of you then you will be running. If there is a safety risk posed by someone on another course (spinning tires and kicking up rocks, having a chance to roll, etc.) then a competitor can not be forced to proceed.
Other than that there is always people running on one course or another so I'm not sure what competition you're talking about:confused:
welndmn 07-25-2002, 01:16 PM I agree roger, I have been to a lot of events, if it were not for beer i would of have to be doing someting else to kill those long voids inbtween runs http://www.uniquehardware.co.uk/server-smilies/ups/budaz/jerk.gif
But i figure its people using their brake down time and what not, thats taking so long.
Just suck it up and sit down and wait
FearMe 07-25-2002, 01:21 PM I know there are reasons, but when the course is clear, there are trucks waiting to start why not start them?
And,tThank god for the fat drunk guy puking........
That's a problem with any kind of event. I go bonkers when we have delays at my mud races. You'll hear me saying stuff like "Let's race! We are now 5 minutes into a zero minute intermission!" :D

Big Rich 07-25-2002, 03:24 PM Well you all make it sound so easy:flipoff2: With at least 7-12 course's at a calrocs event and 14 at a RCAA event, I believe you can find action, unless you are not moving also:D We the Promoters would like the flow to be perfect also, but each judge has a pace(look around at your work next time your there, everyone work the same) flags/cones to be reset, water to be drunk and sometimes just taking a breather.
But alas I agree rapid no stop (nearly) action would be best.

reddwarf 07-25-2002, 03:29 PM "racing" has always been responsible for a great deal of the new vehicle technology that we enjoy even on our bare-bones wheelin rigs. From the first hill climbs at Pike's Peak to NASCAR and Formula 1, racers are learning things that benefit (eventually) the entire automotive community. "Rock Racing", if you want to call it that, certainly has its place, in addition to the entertainment factor.
However, we as wheelers need to keep the spirit of "finesse driving" alive on the trails, just as we don't drive like Dale Earnhardt around town (well, most of us anyways:D ). If not, we will see more of the type fiascos where posers who don't know what they are doing are coming out and just stomping the gas, spinning tires til they get to the top, or roll over, thinking that this is the way to wheel.
In short, the rocks should be no different than anywhere else: those who push the envelope in competition, and the rest of us who try to apply what we can learn to our own recreational wheeling.
Jaffer 07-25-2002, 05:55 PM A lot of times it's because there is a bottle neck a gate or two ahead.
I notice how gates 1 and 2 always seem to get done in pretty quick order ... then there are roll overs and breakages that put on the stopper.
The first batch of gates may have already been shut down for the day but if you have backed up lines on gates 3, 5 and 7 so the officials at 3 are in no hurry.
And if the officials are not calling for staging the drivers and spotters do surely enjoy the breather and are in no hurry to act in a "professional" manor just to keep you entertained.
 .? .. then take a hike. You have to go to the action.
nobody20 07-26-2002, 08:42 AM Okay, I have only been to 6 rockcrawling events. Even the closest one is a 550 mile drive east of where I live.
They were 4 ARCA (now RCAA) events:
1999 Framington (1st ARCA event)
2000 Phoenix (2nd ARCA event)
2001 Las Cruces (7th ARCA event)
2001 Farmington (9th ARCA event)
and 2 Hazels Events:
1998 Las Cruces (1st National event)
1999 Johnson Valley (Hazel's 2nd event)
I am just glad to have events to go to so the waits are tolerable. It seems like the waits afford me the opportunity to meet new people in the crowd and have some interesting conversations. Sometimes it would be nice if the waits were a little shorter. Since I feel that I started attending the events on the ground floor since I went to ther first four consective national events and at least one a year since then I feel that I can make they comment that they just keep getting better and better organized. Organizers keep up the good work.
It is really nice to see an promoter like Big Rich really taking part in the various forums on the BB. I wish other promoters would do the same - and maybe they do and I just don't know it.
Just plain happy to have events and organizers/promoters.
I plan soon to move to Phoenix for a centeral location wheer I can attend more events and wheel right outside the city.

I wish they did to. Some watch this board for information. I know they do because I'll get phone calls after I announce to the PBB members what I doing. Others have friends or employees watch and or bring info to the board once in a while (prorock).
I just feel it's my duty to be available to those that enjoy the sport, not that I'm a wealth of information or tech, but I hope that once in awhile I can contribute.

rpenner54 07-26-2002, 10:00 AM Why not figure out a way to get kids involved at these "half times" or what ever you might call them. Get kids to get it awn in anything from power wheels to 4 wheelers. It may not be the greatest spectator parts to watch, however it will get a future generation going and provide something to watch during the "dead air" time... :)
I don't know how you would do it but I bet something could be done...
