96 xj with the auto....
shifting starts off good when the vehicle has been sitting for awhile or is cold.
but it will start to not shift back to low after coming to a stop, I can manually shift it.
Just started doing this, vehicle does not get abused, still low mileage considering age, full flush less than 6000 miles ago, down shifts at highway speeds to overdrive just fine.
Any experienced this before?

Does it matter how high it shifts before it will not downshift again? Did the problem start shortly after the flush? Some people think flushing an auto trans can cause problems like this.

I was told due to the detergents in ATF that flushing them with high miles is bad juju. Never flushed em and never had a problem.

Not detergents, fluid thickness. Old fluid gets thicker. When you flush an old tranny out, the seals are worn and the new, thinner fluid blows past them, causing weird behavior. I've seen it over and over again, even lost a TH350 due to this very problem. IF you do change/flush the fluid, I'd recommend Lucas Trans-Fix. Its really good stuff and I've used it in all my automatics. It really helped the 700R4 in my camaro regain its shift firmness.
edit: If your trans isn't havn't any problems before you change fluid, only use half the bottle.

TPS, Mine acted similar when my TPS was out of wack... I guess it thought the gas was on a little so it did not downshift when stopped, but manually shifting worked...
You know how to adjust the TPS?
