: how to time 1.6 12v

the timing belt was off so were does the cam need to been set and the crank?
what number does it fire on?

well, obviously, set the no. 1 piston to top dead center. now, all the books say to do this, the mark on the crank is facing straight upwards, and the one on the cam is facing straight upwards, too.

but this is wrong, I've had a bunch of sammy's, from different year models, and they all time like this: the mark on the cam faces straight down towards the crank, and the one on the crank faces straight up to the cam, make sure the belt is tight on the right (driver side as you're working on it) when you put it on, the slack is taken up on the left side(pass. side of engine)

firing order is 1-3-4-2 if I remember correctly, someone may have to check me on that.

oh, wait, you said a 12 valve. for some weird reason, I thought that's what it was, but it was an 8 valve........

sorry. maybe it's the same?
