: Picked up a 85 military K30 long post

I will send in for a red star this week so I can post some pics of this thing I drug home today and do a build thread on it. 85 Airforce truck, 1 and 1/4 ton 9400lb gross, 6.2 diesel, T400, Hydroboost brakes . NP208 i think? Unfortunately its not the cast iron 205. Dana 60 frt, 4.56 gears and supposedly these all have a detroit or some kind of posi in the 14 bolt FF rears right?

Bought it for the drivetrain, the problem is their is not a spot of rust on the body, floors perfect, frame perfect. In Texas. A few pretty minor dents. Runs good. Paid 1300. Prob could have gotten it for less, he was asking 1500 for it and was happy when i offered 13. I guess I figure I dont want to piss somebody off by lowballing them and have them tell me to go pee up a rope over a hundred or two when I know that I wanted it and drove an hour over there to look at it.

When i drove it up the ramps it mashed the back of the trailer straight to the dirt which almost picked the ass of my C2500 tow unit off the ground, tried to drive up the trailer and it just pushed the trailer and truck forward about 5 feet. Back wheels just slid, buddy jumped in it and stood on the brake and I got the heavy biotch loaded.

Might be a crime to strip this thing, but I have a 2wd 92 C3500 dually with a trashed 6.5 and good NV4500 and was figuring on doing a low dollar tow rig/ work truck build by combining the good stuff from both trucks.

Keep the 92 cab and NV4500, run the 6.2 with the turbo off the 6.5- no computer on either engine.

Seriously thinking about pulling the 85 body and bed off the 4x4 frame, yank the tT400 out and swap the NV4500 into it. Box the frame from front to back and mount the 92 Cab and front end on it , swap to the dually rear hubs and wheels and build a flat bed and im done :) Easy right. These diesels only have about 6 wires going to the engines. Im a 41 year old aircraft mechanic, chevys forever and I posess the technology, tooling and millermatic200 to make this happen.

Result will be a 4x4 92 chevy dually, really nice interior, D60 frnt, 14FF rear, 4.56 gears , NV4500 overdrive .73 ratio should make the 456s tolerable. Not gonna be a powerhouse but I think the 6.2 with the turbo on it will do what I need it too. Low dollar is the name of the game on this build as I need to spend real money building a house and shop on 8.5 acres I bought recently.

When I start the build thread should I put in here or in the towrig section or the go screw myself section ?

When I pull the cab and bed off the military truck I will offer it all for sale cheap in the classifieds, the body is way too nice to crush.

sounds like a good build, I would put it in the Chevy section. Sounds like it will be a monster, although I have never seen a turbo on a 6.2, so should be interesting, although I am sure it has been done. Keep us informed.

There are 2 good forums that for the 6.2 and 6.5 diesels- dieselplace and dieseltowingresource . Both have tons of info and helpful people regarding those engines.

It seems like the 6.2 and the 92,93 mechanical injection 6.5 turbos are not near as much trouble as the 94 to 00 computer 6.5s, the guys that have them seem to be gluttons for punishment because as soon as they get them running something else breaks.

The turbo stuff will all bolt right on the 6.2, not looking to hotrod just pep it up a little. Futile to try and make it fast.

I used to own one of these trucks and loved it. The things are tough and will last. It's supposed to be a fairly easy bolt up conversion for the most part to add the 6.5 turbo to the old 6.2. Check out steelsoldiers.com for a ton of info on these old trucks. A few people have done the turbo swap with writeups for reference. I'd love to see how it turns out with the newer body on it (I also had a 90 K1500).

You were right about the detroits in the rear. All M1008s had them and mine worked great. How many miles were on it?

Yep, I know what you mean. I bought a M1008 that was missing parts, pulled the front axle, the rear was already off. But the body is super straight and even has the fold down troop seats in the back and a frame for a vinyl cover over the bed. So I have been storing it because it seems too nice to scrap. Don't know how long that can last though. Its in the background of this pic. Another someday project.

I think the M1008 CUCV is open diff front and rear. The M1031 (maintenance truck) came with the NP205 you were talking about and the gov locker in the rear. There may be some other variations that came with the Gov locker but I'm pretty sure none came with a Detroit. Now, this doesn't mean private snuffy in the motor pool didn't order the part and install one for his 1st Seargent. There are definitely some out there with detroits in them, I just don't think they came with them.

Also, Banks has a sidwinder Turbo kit for the 6.2. I have it on my Burban and it makes a big difference.

OK , New plan is just yank the 6.2 and front 60 to put in my 92 C3500.

Then find a cheap 44 front and one of my spare 350 gas motors and stick back in the old K30 so it will be spared and not parted out.

All of the M1008's that I know of came with a Detroit locker in the rear 14FF, however I believed that most if not all M1009's had a Gov-lock in the rear 10-bolt???

I picked this one up the other day for the 60 with a front locker and the bed, the bed is all aluminum and the plans were to use it on a chase truck, but now its for sale.

This cab is beat for only having 8900 miles.

I got this one last year for the axles for the willys and the box for the front of my trailer.

No, it's not.

There were military crewcabs, but not w/the 4.56'd, locked 1-tons.

Yes it's true, the military had single cab 4x4 duallys during the same time period. I have had two of them and they were 4.56 geared with a detriot in the rear.
I don't have any pics but I'm sure they can be found on the internet.

The models of these trucks were......M1028A2 and M1028A3 they only made a handful of these in the dually 4x4 versions.

1-26. DUAL WHEEL CONFIGURATION. a. M1028A2 and M1028A3 are shelter carriers converted to dual rear wheels. This provides greater load carrying capability and increased stability, b. Axles are heavier and dual wheels spread loads more evenly. Change 2 1-19/(1-20 blank)

if you have gone throught so many, where are all the axles?

As of right now I have (4) complete trucks and (7) sets of axles, I have sold many, many sets of axles over the years including a few brand new in the crate 14 bolt and dana 60 fronts....I'll go outside and take a few pics.

Here is a couple pics of (2) of my cucv trucks, the first one I bought off of craigslist for $200.00!!
The second truck was $800.00. Also a couple of pics of (3) of my sets of cucv axles.

? the dually cucv trucks, what rear axle do they have? should be a d70. if in fact so wouldn't they be detroited and 4.56s too?

The rest of those axles are in my back yard!:flipoff2:
I have a military crewcab shortbed w/factory banks turbo 6.2.....straight from MY factory.I built it out of your typical M1008 truck. honestly never heard of a military crewcab that was built like the CUCV's. I have seen crewcab airforce trucks, but they were just like any civvy version you can get
