I really want one of these: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=257242&stc=1&d=1154629596
from here: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=494898&highlight=poly+buggy
what are they called and where can you find them used? ideally I want one that is 5' wide and 10' long about 2' tall
do any of you guys have one or is poly the only place? what else have you used/made for building a chassis and misc. other things. can you give me some pointers? I like the flat sides on the table that poly has, that would make things like the tumblehome easy to get perfectly even.
I have a line on one but I just want to make sure it is the best one I can get so I dont have to do it over again in a few years.

I saw a few sell for cheap at a welding shop auction recently. By cheap I mean they were from $300 to $700. One was cast iron (steel?) and had square holes in it for various weird fixtures they had. The others were more similar to that. If I had the room I would have brought one home. And rented a crane to take it off the trailer!

The ones with square holes are called acorn tables. Expensive though.

All the ones I've seen were homemade. The last one my buddy made for building motorcycle frames cost ~$400 in steel 3 years ago, so I can only imagine how much it would cost in materials alone to actually build a table big enough to fit a whole car sized chassis on.

If that is a solid block, you better be sitting down when you here the price.
I just ordered 2 plates for work yesterday. 4'x10'x1.25" and they were ~$1200 each.

there isnt a chance in hell I would even consider building something like this.
I know where to get them from for reasonable prices but I am curious as to what features or styles people like and what works the best for builders.

See the table in this post. I think I am going to build the top to mine the same with a larger gap between slats. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=693286&highlight=sniper+fab
Im pretty sure those tables are solid and blanchard ground to be COMPLETELY flat. It wont be cheap. The square hole ones are acorn tables, not ideal for a chassis and Ive only seen them in like 4'x4'. At my old job there was a BIG table. 8'x8' and made outa 3" solid steel. But then again, the table was built for the purpose of the fitters having an entire unit on the table to put in the nozzles.
Ive got an old transfer table(think UPS transfer roller things) that used to have basically upside down castors bolted to it. Its got a 4" square pattern ALL over it which is nice. I just tapped all the holes. I need to get a new top for it though, it was only 1/4" and its pretty rusted out. Table is nice and sturdy though.

A lot of these flat type of tables are 1" or 1.5" plate stock welded together and then blanchard ground. It's very expensive! I like the table Chad has linked. That would be a lot more versatile than an acorn table IMO.
I've been looking at some 5x10 Acorn tables but they are almost $10000. :(
