: Ford vs. Chevy Engine Rotation

Alright, someone who is smarter than me settle this dispute.. do all ford, chevy and mopar V-8s spin the same direction or do some of them spin in diferent directions.. specificly .. the small blocks.. and furthermore how then can you swap a ford x-mission into a rig that has a chev motor in it .. (e.g. nv4500) or something similar.. wouldnt it be rotating the wrong way?

i never thought of that but i have a nv4500 behind my 302 :flipoff2:

you can get small blocks that spin the opposite direction of all automobile engines ............... marine "mirror" motors.

It depends which way you start it and if it's a deisel sometimes they run backwards.

Stupid question :flipoff2:

they all rotate the same way. The only automotive engines that rotate "backwards" are the corvair and most Hondas. corvair did it so they could use a conventiaonal ring and pinion. Honda did it so their front wheel drive cars handle better due to the torque reaction. Whoever thought they rotated different ways probably saw a reverse rotation fan on a vehicle with a serpentine belt.

I know that you are talking automotive here but some chevrolet marine engines are reverse rotating.

There are Ford,Chrysler,International,BMW,AMC-Nash reverse rotation marine engines as well.

does the engine actually spin reversed or is that done in the drive?

mj- read it again, slowly. :flipoff2:
Probably chit chat since this isn't much of a contribution to the subject- but-
some of the old 2 stroke Yamaha street bikes, like RD350 and 400, would really mess with you. I guess a lot of these guys would bolt on aftermarket ignitions and some of them would sputter out a bit at idle. The rider wouldn't even know anything was going on, but when he'd let the clutch out, the motor would be running marine style, backwards.

CRUNCH!

OOPS!

They actually spin the opposite direction, and i beleive there is an older chrysler 440 car that spun the other direction also.

It was a 413HD, & only used in 1.25 to 2.0 ton early to mid 60's dodge trucks.

Thanks OLD SCOUT, my teeny little brain could only remember that there was a non marine app that went backwards but couldnt remember what it was.

Your the only person I've ever met that has knowable about these HD industrial engines.

I found a timing set from one of the 413HDs and tried to use it for a high performance reverse rotation marine set up. No ones makes RR cams for BB Chryslers anymore, so I tried to spin the cam standard rotation and the crank reverse rotation using the two gear set from a 413HD.

Since you say (tried) i take it, it didnt work ? Someone has to be willing to make you a cam ?

Your right the cam would of been easy to have ground out of billet steel. The problem was the gear on the cam that drives the distributor and oil pump. Yes I could of gone to a crank drive distributor and a belt drive oil pump, but it was easer and much cheaper to rework the oil pump in the transmission and buy a left hand prop.

It's a strange boat to begin with.
