: What do you guys do about keeping your rigs/trucks from being broken into?
SMART ASS 07-25-2002, 11:13 PM Just curious to see what others have done...
My jeep just got broken into when i was at the cindome theaters on greenback, 50$ broke ass stereo was taken and a 40$ cb and the change in the center console was gone... They punched out the pass side vent window, an ez 20$ PNP fix...
The rest of the truck was messy beyond belief, so they probably said fuk the rest... Phew, because my tools were in the back...
I also have a Ranger with 1/2 doors, nice stereo, 800mhz scanner, cb.. all the good stuff including tool boxes galore in the back...
I am pondering building a low wattage transmitter to page me within a mile of my truck if it is being broken into, so i can handle things the AMERICAN way
what 2 do what 2 do?
UZI 9mm 07-25-2002, 11:44 PM brace yourself.
keep your rig totally empty on the inside. no, really. if you can see in, and there's obviously nothing there, then why break in? i leave my (empty) glove box open as well.
now i'm not saying you can't be sneaky about it:D i have a plate steel lockbox painted flat black under my driver's seat that blends in so well, it looks like there is nothing under the seat.
my cd player is a pull out model that i either take with me or lock in the box if i'm only away for a few minutes.
i built my speakers and amp 'n stuff into nooks and crannies and covered with oem material so as to be fairly invisible.
have no expensive stereo/performance stickers advertising "i've got stuff! steal it from me!"
if there's shit and junk everywhere, there *may* just be something worthwhile to rummage through.....
i lock the steering wheel with a kryptonite lock to a grab bar, and have a very loud, very visible combo alarm/starter kill/mass proximity warn away.
the remote for my alarm is a pager, but all it does really, is make you not enjoy your dinner in a restaurant, when some passing Harley sets off the alarm. how many movies/dinners/hot dates are you really gonna interrupt to go running 1/2 a mile to your jeep to see it's just a false alarm?:flipoff2:
my hood is locked down with another kryptonite cable lock from beneath, to prevent easy access to the battery. *shrug* you can only do so much.:(

but for the one time that it is for real i would think it's worth it. we have countless hours and money into our rigs not to mention the items that we keep in them (tools...).
happy trails

PIAA_Lites 07-26-2002, 12:18 AM I do not think you should put up a fight or chase the criminal or criminals. The last time I fought with a thief, he pulled out a big gun, 45 out. So after that, I said, "It is all yours." You might be dealing with some hard core criminals. Just something to think about.
UZI 9mm 07-26-2002, 12:23 AM if you're so far away from your rig that you need a pager to tell you the alarm is going off, do you realistically think you would be able to get back before either they had already left, or you would be in any kind of condition to do anything about it? (*pant* stop *wheeze* right *gasp* there *cough* you *dizzy* thieving *faint* bast........":D
if i'm close enough to hear my alarm go off, yer damn right i check it out, real quick! GRRRRR!
i'm not saying a pager might not come in handy in some possible situation, (after all i *do* have one), but i'm just playing "devil's advocate."
Not to mention if you're outside of a couple hundred feet you'll get there and they'll be long gone. The first answer was the best, leave nothing in it. Leaving something in a jeep is just asking for it to walk away
As mentioned, dont leave anything of value in there while your gone. In my tuck, the rear windows are out and the doors are off most of the time. But, my CB is in a lock box, its impossable to hotwire my truck. *starting it invloves 3 steps, only one invloves a key* And my tool box is bolted down, and locked up tighter than fort knox. If these people are desprate enough to bust out a torch and start cutting shit loose, then more power to them.
Shure stuff has been stolen, but it not anything i could bolt down well. D60 axle shafts while still in the axle, hubs and a spare d-shaft aal vanished while at work one day. And you also have to remember, anybody who sees this crap going on simply assumes that the thief owns the truck, or is a friend of yours. So dont expect the cops to be like "HAULT! Drop that stack of cd's and put your hands on your head!"
Hmm. Lets review. Clean your rig, and leave anything that you afford to have stolen at home. If you must bring it, bolt/weld/hide that thing realy damn well. Our rigs are targets. Because thier big and purdy. Icons of welth to many. So Smart Ass, you are in the clear in that case. :D
For that matter, does it seem to anybody that people are cutting you off in traffic all the time? As if to say "I dare you to bump me! You seem to have money and can pay me for retirement!" Again smart ass exluded... :D
jopes 07-26-2002, 07:58 AM hmm, very few people cut me off. Must be they are afraid of all the dents :D
My bronco is topless and has half doors.
There is nothing inside. if they want the cheap speakers, they are going to have to rip them out. I always take the face plate to the head unit when I go some place. but half the time I never remember to take it with me when I go out of the house.
StinkBug 07-26-2002, 09:24 AM The only thing i leave in my rig is the shitty $100 stereo. everything else i leave at home. the CB comes out real easy and i dont have it in unless i'm wheelin. the rest of the time the truck sits with the top off and the windows down with nothing in it. I do arm the alarm and remove the fuel pump jumper wire, and if i'm gonna be in a movie theatre or away from it for a couple hours I'll lock in the hubs, put it in 4 lo and hit both ARB switches as well as the line lock. I figure most people dont know how to work a twinstick, and probably dont know much about lockers, so even if they somehow got it started without a fuel pump they would have a hard time getting far.

LOVE IT!!!:flipoff2: :D :flipoff2:
Malltero 07-26-2002, 09:45 AM I dont really have to worry about it much around here...
There are so many nicer cars and trucks with money stuff in them, that I can leave my junk unlocked.
But I was thinking about a alarm system hooked up to my co2 tank. Wire some solinoids to set off some air horns in the cabin. Or maybe just dumb the whole tank of co2 on the thief.
That would be one frosty mother.
StinkBug 07-26-2002, 10:23 AM hmmm i like that doug, rig up a pressure switch in the driver seat hooked to a solenoid mounted to the bottom of the steering column aimed right at his crotch. hell i might even rig that up using an old paintball tank.
Dallas
ashmanjeepXJ 07-26-2002, 11:21 AM A 900 PSI solonoid valve would be pricy so throw a 2stage reg or like you said a paint ball gun handle $80 to the output of the tank then wire a 12V 150PSI valve. Those fittings are pricy.
total cost about $200 minus the CO2 tank.
Parker is the MFR:
MKH0NBG45A 3-Way Normally Closed, micro king, 12V 0-120 PSI $23

ItsaCJ6 07-26-2002, 11:25 AM Having the extra space in the 6, I have a large tool box in the back I lock everthing in. I have also rewired the starter to be the horn button. (who needs a horn) and the theif is the last person who wants to honk the horn. It still needs the key to be in "On" to work. Also I have a ball valve I use as a line lock. I just shut it and leave the rest.
Keith 07-26-2002, 11:40 AM I keep it in the garage, and never leave it unattended when out and about. Only way to be sure IMHO.

flimmy 07-26-2002, 05:00 PM I leave mine in the garage :D and if I do take it out it's normally only to work. The only other place it's left unattended is when I go into the conv. store. I did leave it outside one night when I was going to take it to work the next day. So I parked it under my bedroom window. Plus I has 2 dogs (1 is rather big ) that are outside and bark at anything that walks bye (sp).
hybrid 07-26-2002, 06:51 PM there is a guy in scottsdale selling a club that has a Tazer built into it. Rattle the wheel and it goes off for a few seconds, prety cool. Most thefts occour from unplanned oppertunity, if they see it they want it.
BJ On Roids 07-26-2002, 06:52 PM mine has become quite the trash receptacle, if they steal my old fast food rubbish and bits of mayo, then more power to them
to stop them stealing my junk i have:
fuel shutoff valve, and its impossible to find.........so it aint going far
battery isolation switch, whoops, did i disconnect the starter
ignition cutoff switch
NICE....

Smart thing to do?? Nope, not me, i got in the truck and rushed after them. they got away. Now I keep the truck in close range, and a clip loaded...bring it. I keep nothing of value in my truck, and it has an alarm, fuel shut off and starter kill, but what about the fawker with a flat bed and a winch?? Its a big fear and it sucks!!! I've been teaching him since he was a pup and he doesn't even fuck around! Not only is he the best damn alarm you could ever have but he is a pretty good friend too! Can't get that from VIPER! Not only that you can say " Sorry officer I guess the dog just didn't LIKE the guy trying to steal my radio, and by the way I AIN'T even gonna pay the hospital bill!
tsm1mt 08-13-2002, 03:26 PM Maybe what we need is a pager with AUDIO so you can hear what's going on.. Harley cruising by? Glasspacks?
Family getting in the car next to you and one of the kids bumped against your rig?
Or "shuffling" sounds like someone rifling through your stuff.. at which point you transition from "concealed carry" to just "carry" :D
For the most part, my rig sits in front of or behind my shop, one of 'em sits w/ the keys in the ignition, but not much to steal in it - and it's ugly enough no one would WANT to steal it, and if they did, the open headers would alert every pissed off neighbor in the area, and it's cold blooded enough I'd have time to load the long-gun and unleash the dogs.
The other rigs just look like junk (They're all 'Binders. :D ) so no one gives 'em a second glance.. thankfully.
Then again, someone stole the POS stereo, CDs, and wallet from my brother's Jetta Sunday night at his apartment in Missoula..
4x4man 08-13-2002, 04:58 PM i moved into my house like 2 months ago. one night right after i moved in,,i heard someone yelling and moaning . i went outside and seen a guy laying on the ground holding his back, while one of my 39.5 boggers lay next to him. this dumbass had my Z71 jacked up in my carport in the back yard, and took off 1 tire and i guess when he tried to lift it over the fence,,his back went out. i got so pissed i went inside, called the cops,,,,,and put on my steel toed boots. i went up to the thief, and started kicking him in the back. fawk that bastard!!!:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: . i bet i looked funny to the cops in boxer shorts and steel toed boots. i work hard for what i have,,,why cant everyone else do the same instead of trying to take shit from people. if i cant afford it,i dont have it...............................................p eriod.

InfantryYJ 08-13-2002, 06:02 PM I really don't keep much inside the Jeep, the only thing of "value" that they would want to swipe is the CB, I still have the factory CD player and don't plan on getting anything better. I haven't had the top or doors on it since around May. If you really want to steal my Jeep, just come to my house on base and take it, the keys are in it 90% of the time, right in the ignition. I know when I change duty stations, that I'll have to change that habit, but for now, I'm pretty confident that the Jeep will be there in the morning when I wake up.
Grendel 08-13-2002, 06:50 PM I live on a closed road with a few fellow veterans. We all keep an eye out for each other.
Came home a while ago to an old smiling gent packing a 1911 at my front step. Told me someone was sniffing around the house. My wife and kids were inside. He put the pistol to the perp's head and told him the cops were on the way. I guess I got home about 20 mins after the cops left. The gent felt preety spry I guess, he was able to sneak up on the fawker unheard.

Just make sure you feel your life is in danger (not just your property).. so shoot 'em before they have a chance to turn and run..

I didn't think the People's Republic of Kalifornia allowed people to have guns either...
Just yell at 'em a little so they turn around first. :skull:
Oh, and give 'em a weapon of some sort if they don't have one allready. Something without your fingerprints on it.
foley 08-16-2002, 09:28 AM My biggest concern is my tow rig, I park for gas or food on the road, and boom.
How easy is it? Stock dodge truck, pop the door, break the column, jimmy the switch... GONE
$10K tow rig
$1K trailer
$2K worth of camping / trail gear and tools
$1K worth of trail rig
$500 worth of tires
and I'm STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF FAWKIN NOWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PTSchram 08-16-2002, 11:21 AM I'm not worried about folks breaking into the house as I make it a point to be seen carrying hardware:-) into and out of the house.
As for shooting at folks, you must be in "Fear of grievous bodily harm" and, if you shoot somebody who is more than 15 feet away from you (distance varies by jury), they don't call it self-defense, they call it MURDER!
For the truck, I have insurance. And, for when my insurance company says it isn't covered, that's when I remind them my wife works for an insurance company!
Had a friend who awoke one morning to find his cherry GTO had been rammed by a drunk and the guy was trying to get away. Apparently, when the LEOs got there, old Dwayne was standing in the middle of the street wearing only his .357! It didn't take the LEOs long to get there after a few reports of a naked man with a gun standing in the street!
Travis Waldher 08-16-2002, 11:43 AM 1) I ain't tellin you guys what I do to keep my rig from disappearing on me. How stupid would that be? We had a theft a while back of a big yellow jeep that *just* came out of a locked up shop after major work. Funny thing is, it was stolen right after that.. and the only ones that knew it came out were on a message board.
2) I don't leave anything in the Jeep I care about when I am in nice neighborhoods. When there is a poor area next to me I worry less, when it is ghetto, I just don't leave anything sitting around visible.
Moral of the story? Rich/nice neighborhoods have teenagers that respect your shit less than someone who has nothing will.
Yeah.. someone could steal my tow rig, trailer and rig. But with a 1/2 ton truck towing a 8,800lb trailer, they aren't going anywhere fast. LOL
I can't believe that no one has mentioned the classic "NRA sticker."
The following has worked for me thus far:
1) Don't keep anything in it that thieves or punks would want.
2) Disable the vehicle. There are countless ways to do so. Many don't take more than half an hour and some junk switches, valves, etc ... if that.
3) Equip the vehicle with a high quality alarm and a radar prox sensor to keep punks from pissing on the seats when the doors are off.
If anyone makes fun of you for having an alarm, simply hit the included remote start and exclaim that it sure comes in handy in the winter time. It's also a hoot to see "unaware" people freak out when the vehicle fires up and no one's in it.
Moving out to the country from the 'burbs helps as well.

If you install it yourself... (you will if you have a stick). 2Lo, 1st gear. Tell some newbies that your going to get your jeep. hit the button, it starts, comes in a straight line to you, hit it again it shuts off. Of course, you gotta yell, "Jeep, get your ass over here right now!" first. :D

AthlonAJ 08-16-2002, 09:37 PM I used to own a business crawling under people's dashboards and gutting their cars to install audio and security. Alarms are good for dipshit theives (which there are plenty of) but for some they'll just laught at it no matter what brand it is or how much you spent. I was installing some audio in this pompous jerk's Ford Probe and he made a point to tell me in depth about his talking Viper alarm that he spent over $1k on with all the bells and whistles from dual zone proximity and shock sensors to the pager and battery backup... I let him arm it and in less than 2 minutes I had it disabled and his door open without a scratch, he was somewhat disturbed.
A low price alarm will do just as good as a Viper if installed correctly but none of them are foolproof. My own on my store's demonstrator had all the option of course but also had hood, trunk and electric deadbolt locks in the door reinforced with 1/4" plate. Technically it was impossible to open any of the doors unless you had a jaws of life handy. I wanted to dismantle a few stun guns and have the probes mounted in various locations but I figured with my luck some dirtball would sue me after getting a jolt.
If you feel the need for an alarm, get a dual zone proximity sensor for sure, it will discourage the newbie theives. For those that it doesn't scare off give them something to think about once they get inside your rig by mounting a few pain generator sirens here and there- nothing like feeling your eardrum rattle. There used to be a steering wheel lock on the market that had a built in stun device too where if it were not disarmed by remote it would ZAP anyone within a certain distance of it.
Personally with my Jeep I leave so much garbage laying around in it and looking like a heep that no one pays any attention to it. And anything I want to keep in it I bolt down in more ways than one and use odd fasteners.

Gotta call BS here. 7 yards (21 Feet) is the number many Law Enforcement Agencies as well as self defense trainers use. That is the average amount of space a person can cover in 1.5 seconds, also the length of time it takes the average person to draw a weapon.
You can kill someone at a hundred yards if he has a gun pointed at you. Just make sure it is a gun and it is pointed at you.
