Ok
Ive been curious about this for a little while. If you have a piece of equipment in your shop (lathe, bridgeport etc etc) You may have noticed that all the nameplates, instructional tags etc etc are held on by rivets. These rivets appear to be a solid steel round head rivet. The holes however, appear to be blind. Anyone know how these are done?

They have a tapered shaft and are threaded at a very slow pitch. Maybe one turn in an inch. Basically a self tapping screw that you set with a hammer hence the round head. I used to see dead soft iron and brass and copper rivets but the depth of the hole had to be spot on and they didn't attach stuff to thin stock.

That would actually be a very fast pitch... And I have no clue what they are called.

Sorry. Slow twist not slow pitch.

Forgot to mention that they make a version without the threads for people who want to be able to remove them fairly easily to change nameplates. Same tapered shaft though so it just sort of jams it's way in there when you smack it with a hammer.

I'm not sure what they are called, but here is a picture of one. I've been changing nameplates on machines at work and have a few on my desk.

There are lot's of different sizes but they are all much the same. Stand it in the hole and light taps with a hammer will get it started, then drive it home.
We use them everyday on valves

So, what is the best way to get them out without damaging the machine or nameplate?

most of the ones i worked on were drilled all the way through and i was able to punch them out from the back. the ones that were truly blind, i grabbed with vice grips.

X2 on calling them "Drive rivets". You can remove them by drilling & pulling/turning them out with a small LH spiral type extractor.
