I am installing a non-HD Dana 70 differential in a Dana 70 HD today, and was going to have the carrier machined down .125" on each end to fit. Then I discovered two .124" shims (outboard differential bearing preload spacer plates - per spicer) between the bearing races of the old diff and the housing. If I just remove these, I am within .001" of the amount I was going to machine off the new carrier, which I can allow for in the under bearing shims.
Anyone familiar with this diff and axle to know if I can ditch these without problems and save the machine work?
