i have one i am planning on using on my swap on my ZR2. i was just wondering how well it would hold up to a stock 5.3L and 36" Iroks.

I've seen 4cyl hold up to 4.3's on 38's....all in how you drive it...

Depends if you are talking about the TRD selectable rear axle or the 8.4 non-TRD axle. In this case, TRD really does mean TuRD and if you have one with the locker, chances are it won't hold up. If you have the non-TRD Tacoma axle, you should be OK if you don't wheel like a maniac.

Thanks, I will ask the fella i got it from to see which one it came out of. all i really know is it came out of a 98 tacoma v6 and doesnt have the E-locker.

You have the better one. Its not V6 or V4 in the Tacomas, its either a 8" TRD or a "8.4" non-TRD, or whatever the hell comes in the little 2wd/ 5 lug ones ??a 7.5"?? or something.

the 8.4 as refered to which really is an 8 inch is the beefiest of the toy 8's and will hold up to alot of abuse but the shafts will become your weak link no doubt

I have never had a problem with my e-lock rear. I've had the same 4.88 gears since 01 and have broken both stock axle shafts with no damage to the e-lock rear. I'm also on 37s with a crawler.

yeah, but what engien are you running?

the point being made isnt that the elocker 8" rear is weak, but that it still uses the old 8" which was designed for the 4 cylinders

The 8.4 is a pretty badass chunk. It has the bracing that general lee posted and its also got a pretty big pinion. If I ever do a centered rear that is what I would use (other than tons)

I thought e-lockers were the craze....is it just the crown gear that makes it weak?

Did some digging...

The 8.4" - located in T-100 and non TRD pre runners -

In the past this diff has also been mistakenly called an 8.4" or 8.25" diff. The ring gear actually measures 8", but it is not compatible with the older 8" diffs at all. The extra strength of this diff comes from the bearing cap/truss and large diameter pinion gear shaft.

E-locker - Still the strong choice...

A factory option on 3rd Gen. 4Runners, Tacoma 4x4's, and Tacoma PreRunner 4x2's is an electric locking rear differential. This diff is a 4-pinon design based on the Turbo/V6 8" diff and uses the same gear sets.
These locking diffs can be retrofitted into 8" diff axles if the axle housing is modified (see this article for more info). It cannot be easily retrofitted into a T100/Tundra or open-diff Tacoma style axle housing because the mounting bolt pattern is smaller. It "could" be done by an axle builder by doing major work to the mounting flange, but that is not really a practical option.
