lets see some atv haulin trailers
long narrow atv trailers , lets see em / 14 bolt as a trailer axle?

lets see some shots of custom/bought atv trailers,

i am thinkin of building a long narrow trailer to hold 2 or 3 5-600 cc 4x4 atvs,

- - -- - -- specs for what i want to build.- - --- - - -- - -

specs 14 bolt or 10.25 sterling rear, no carrier, no axle shafts, just covers to hold the oil in
dual rear wheels for the trailer, 4 tires and rims total with one axle,
some type of 33" narrow tires(some place where i park are pretty bad, plus i have to hop a 15" curb to back my trailler in my driveway.
f-150 leaf springs some time
all brakes takin off, i dont think ill need em for 3 quads,
some sort of tool box up front. (for helmets, coveralls, boots,)
bunch of running lights for the sides, led rear lights,

flame on.

Long and narrow could cause problems with tounge weight, have to plan carefully, depending on your state you may need brakes over a certain weight, IIRC many states are in the 2000# range. Why build with a dually axle? If I was going to build what you are talking about I would just buy a trailer axle and run a decently tall single tire, maybe a 235/85/16.

Seems overkill for 3 quads. Why do you want a long skinny trailer? I just raced a week ago, my 400EX and my buddies Can-am Outlander. Both bikes in my 8' bed with enough gear for both of us for the day. We had room to spare in the cab too. We didn't even need the trailer. A medium sized landscape trailer would be more than enough for 3 quads and gear, I see them used all the time around me for $500-700.

Seems overkill for 3 quads.

That is what i was thinking.... A fat quad weighs 750# or something right? x3 = 2250#.

14 bolt axle is rated for way more than that. One E rated tire is good for that much as well....

A dually 14 bolt would probably handle my fat Scout!

This is a 5x14 I built last year.

Why lug around a 14 bolt and have to deal with taking out the carrier? I wouldn't run a single axle if hauling over 1000 lbs. Tandem is way more stable and way more forgiving on weight distribution than a single axle.

You can buy complete 5000 lb trailer axles for pretty cheap so I wouldn't mess with modifying a 14 bolt for trailer duty.

Isn't it illegal in some states to use an vehicle as a trailer axle. I think I remember something about that on this site not long ago

IIRC, it's illegal for a commercial hauler to use a vehicle axle for a trailer axle.

Closest I have is this Pick up bed trailer that I made. I added a couple feet from a second bed to it. With the tailgate down there is around 12 feet of floor. Its a 12 bolt axle housing that I welded front spindles onto. It is a very handy trailer for all kinds of hauling.

HAHA, I stuck a 14 bolt I had lying around in my 4'x6'? offroad Jeep trailer:laughing:. It added a shit ton of weight, but for my one trip it will be fine. The reason I did it since someone will ask, poke fun, or tell me why it was a bad idea:shaking:; My old one was fubar for a long trip and the 14 matches my tires/wheel combo for the truck and trailer making it easier to carry multiple spare tires and I shouldn't have to worry about overloading it:flipoff2:. We are taking the truck/camper/trailer on a road trip to Alaska for 3 weeks in August and I figured the more stuff that is interchangeable the better. After we get back, I will install a narrower trailer axle that matches the Jeep.

14 bolt is the perfect cheap trailer axle, strip drums, axle shafts, all the guts including the removable pinion and grease the bearings with marine grease forget the gear oil. axle wont weigh more then 230 pounds or so, im in the process of doing it for my 4x10 atv trailer that currently has a d35 under it.

but if you wanna leave the drums on one cool thing you can do is rig up a parking brake for your trailer, just mount an e brake on the tounge and run some wire under the trailer and use one of the cross members to mount the e brake cables off the 14 bolt to and hook the wire up and bam you got a parking brake for your trailer lol.

another trick is when you mount the 14 bolt make yourself a diff cover out of flat stock and then weld your spring perches on so the 14 bolt axle diff cover is parallel to the ground and you will have loads of clearance.

Every time you see a piece of shit 16-30 bumber pull travel trailer stop and ask if they want you to haul it off.

I have brought 3 of these things for hay haulers 2 under $200 and one for free.

Just cut the bolts off the frame and push the camper off...... wallha....nice narrow bumber pull with brakes.

Just a word of advice from personal experience, if you use a torch to cut the bolts, have a water hose ready....I burned one up in a friends driveway:eek:

I say cut the bolts because on those old trailers they are rusty and also break loose on the top side in the floor.

Just an idea........Good luck with your build

I'm almost done building a 7'X12' deck over aluminum trailer to hual 3 large quads side by side. I used a 3000lb axle and 175/80-13" rims. The deck height is 27.5". Sorry, no pics uploaded to the net.

Why duals? IMO 33" tires would be way to tall. I'd use some 265/75's, (~30.5" tall) and are easy to find some good used load range D tires.

Also how about cutting the center section out and replacing it with a section of tube/pipe? That would eliminate the diff clearance issues and would look better.
