: horrible MPG!!
green73 07-26-2002, 07:16 PM Here it goes F-engine, 2f intake, 6to1 header, pertronix ignition w/msd6 amplifier, weber 38dgas carb w/fuel pressure regulator set at 1psi. All cyllinders read 120 for compression. I just did some math and in town I am getting 6.5mpg. I haven't done any highway driving. Am I alone with these #'s. If not any suggestions, to improve this? I plan on a cross country drive in October, but having doubts with this kind of mileage.
well........4649 miles from Anchroage to NYC, so roundtrip you will need 1,544 gallons of fuel:eek:

Ugh!! When I first got my 40 last summer, I was getting about 8.5 to 10 MPG around town. I drove it 1888 miles in late June to CO and got about 11-12 MPG on the trip, after I had it Steamboat I was getting 13.5 MPG. Ever since I seized the engine...:(
Shold get my "bionic" carb back from Jim C. next week!!:D
dog walker 07-26-2002, 10:48 PM Don't expect much better with that Weber 38mm! Get a 36mm or a Motorcraft/Holley/stock carb if you wanna get up to the 11-13 mpg range.
Jeff
Keith Envolsen 07-26-2002, 11:25 PM I have a stock carb, air cleaner and linkage for sale. I think best MPG was 12-13 FWY. on a 2F. The stock carb seems to be the setup for sidehills anyhow.
Advent Horizon 07-27-2002, 12:21 AM Get Mark Whatley to build ya an Aisan franken-carb! (he says as he holds one such carb recently purchased in the parking lot of a grocery store:D )
I think that weber is probably it, you sure seemed like you were running really rich the whole time I was behind ya on the highway, I could even smell it:eek:
You'll also do a bit better with the 35's...I lose between 3 and 5 mpg when I swap to the 235's from the 33's each winter.
green73 07-27-2002, 12:25 AM and the weber seemed like such a good idea at the time too. maybe I should get it out on the highway and see what happens to the mileage.
morgan 07-27-2002, 11:02 AM Stupid question: Did you account for oversize tires? (i.e. Is your odometer reading accurately?)
Can you get your hands on a GPS to determine whether your mileage is correct?
Not meaning to imply anything, just writing this based on my own experience with cruiser calculations. :)
My FJ55 gets around 12mpg with the stock 2F, big tires, loaded for the trail at ~1200lbs over stock curb weight.
Morgan
Advent Horizon 07-27-2002, 11:18 AM He has a GPS mounted on his dash, so he's taken care of there :)
cruiserbrett 07-27-2002, 07:08 PM 6.5 MPG??? Holy crap... I drove my FJ55('74 F stock 130k mile motor, stock carb, improperly hooked up Vac advance dist, and MAF headers) across the US. 6000+ mile round trip and I HONESTLY averaged 16.5 MPG(with the 16% correction for 32" tires-3.70 3rds as well) It was also loaded with about 800 lbs of gear and a FJ60 H42/t-case
Best I saw for a tank was nearly ~19.5 MPG, and WORST was ~13 MPG in the hills of New Mexico, and also in WV and VA.
Tune them correctly and they will be okay...

FIXXXXAH 07-27-2002, 07:28 PM yeh... those New Mexico hill's are killer man, i'll tell ya...
Matt:p
CruisD64 07-28-2002, 12:44 AM When I first had my 78, I got around the same mileage, maybe 7 mpg. Anyways, I just gave it a normal tune-up and soon realized that it was a combination of several small vacuum leaks.
green73 07-29-2002, 01:26 AM I just solved the mileage issue. Gonna tow it to Va. HAHAHA. I still need to run a full tank through and re calculate. I tweaked with the carb midtank before and got those horrible #'s. I leaned it out a bunch. and it seems a lot better in town. No black smoke anymore. BTW I for got the tire issue. Running 31's for now. 35's go on next month :D
wngrog 07-29-2002, 03:25 AM My 2F was getting 4-6 MPG at the end of its life :(
The 38mm WEBER was always wide open on the road just to keep it going.
Poured black smoke! Ran like hell on the trail though....
