i'm going to be towing a very light... maybe 2700# rig and trailer. i've found a 91' f-250 auto with a 460 and about 140,000 miles on it OR.... 87' f-250 5 speed 6.9l diesel with 50,000 miles on it. both are the same price... both are longbeds extracabs... the milage of the diesel is making me lean that way but i don't know anything about diesels except that this 6.9 isn't going to win any races to the top of the mountain. i'd probably want to add more power to it... turbo? so for the most part i will be towing a very light buggy with the occasional short trip heavier load. this will also double as my daily driver. so give the blind man some advice here. :D

They are both good choices. Are you sure the diesel has a 5spd ? The 6.9 will smoke alot, especially under load, can you deal with what your towing turning black.

I have an 86 f250 with the 6.9 in it. Mine is a c6 though. Your right it aint gonna win any races up hill. It does great on flat ground. I get around 13mpg towing. The 6.9 is mechanical, no electronics controling every thing. They have a history of blowing the factory head gasket, but after replaced they are fine. The injector pump useually goes at around 100,000 miles. I'm not putting it down(I love mine) Just letting you know some of the known problems. Go to ford-diesel.com, they have a 6.9 forum with a welth of info.

newer injector and only 51,000 original miles :eek:.... i bought the diesel today. man it's sweet. time for propane, exhaust, and maybe a turbo now. :D

no no no no, turbo first if you are going to turbo it. exhaust usally comes with the turbo kit and then propane later.

the turbo i'm eyeing doesn't come with exhuast. so i'm going to do exhaust, turbo, and then maybe propane... might not care about that after the turbo. :D so far it's not as underpowerd as i had expected it to be but it definatly needs some help.

Like I said, On flat ground its great. It pulls strong. Just slow as hell going up hill. I used to run about 45-50mph in third gear screamin the motor in my Toyota at 3500 rpms up the hill. Now I'm still doin 45-50 but in AC with big comffy captains chairs and I dont have to yell to have a conversation.
