: home made onboard welder and wire size

I'm wrapping up this project and was curious what a reasonable wire size would be for the stringer/ground.

My alt is 100 amps. Would 4 guage be too small? I found a "good" set of 4 guage jumper cables that would work perfect(about 16 feet) for the stringer/ground.

Or should I just jump to 0 guage?

Cost is a little bit of an issue but not if it presents a fire hazard <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0">

Also, anyone know where to get a 110V+ volt meter that is sealed(water proof)?

TIA,
John

4ga will be fine. It might take some of the power from the welder but not enough to worry about with the length of the leads you will probably be using.

That's right. 4 ga works for me. The cables never get hot and I have 4 ga wire on my 150 amp TIG torch with 25 ft leads and it works fine.

4 gauge works fine. Go with the fine strand welding cable....about $1 a foot.
