Ok here is my problem, I broke a rear 60 shaft a couple of weeks ago. Now that I have finally gotten around to wanting to fix it, I pulled the shaft out of the back but I cannot get the broken piece out. This normally wouldnt be a problem becuase I could pull the detroit out and get the piece out. However, this time it didnt break right by the locker and the broken piece extends to far into the tube for me to pull the carrier out. A magnet doesent work it seems siezed in there. Any suggestions??

OK.
Here is a crude way.
Take a piece of pipe that will fit up against the broken stub and is long enough to reach from the broken stub to beyond the housing.
Take several welding electrodes and weld them end to end, to make one long electrode.
Tape the joints.
Stick pipe into housing and up against the stub.
Insert the long electrode into pipe.
Connect arc welding leads to pipe and electrode as requred to weld pipe to broken stub.
Hey, I said it was crude.

You might just be on to something there.........

Uh, why not just take out the other axle shaft, and use a long rod to push it out the other side?:D

I agree with SM.. just pull the other shaft, and push the other piece out..

I took some tie up wire (the stiff kind) and used the other half of the axle and made a very snug loop (like a lasso)sp? i mean tight! and sent it in it came out in about 5 min of fishing. This was the only advise the local axleshop had. The key is in making a perfect lasso. REALLY tight around the shaft or it will just slide off. I thought about the welding thing but what if you tack your detroit?? then the axle is really stuck?? I never seen it but just my guess.

there might be a cross shaft in the way, preventing you from pushing the old shaft out from the other side. that's what happened to my friend on hiks ford 10.25, so his dad somehow used a piece of wire to push it out, i cant remember if he came in from the diff cover, or the other side axletube.
good luck,
Jeff

Just had the same thing happen to me. Get a piece of 3/8 in ,thick wall ss tubing and pull the other axle shaft. You can get past the cross pin and smack the end of the tubing with a hammer, pushing the busted piece out.

Thanks for the help, I will definatly try that. The cross pin is definatly in the way but I should be able to get by it with something.

snap on sells a teliscoping magnet that is something like 11# and small enough to fit. its worked several times for me.

Glad this came up, I'll be doing the same thing tomorrow. I was going to do the "push a pipe through from the otherside approach"

if the cross pin is in the way why not remove it? Seems like a long pole/rod from the far side is the way to go...
