: Rear Shackle Flip?

I've got a '78 crewcab and 4" rear springs & factory blocks. I would like to flip the rear hangers to get rid of the blocks. Is this possible? I did a search, and nothing came up.

sure is possible. www.ramchargercentral.com sells a kit, or you could just go to the wrecking yard, and buy 2 more of the hangers ment for the front of the springs, or you can weld up the top of the current brackets, and cut the bottom out. i personally would mount the springs under the factory front hangers picked up at a wrecking yard.

I checked out the rear front hangers, and I see what your talking about. Have you done this? If so, does it bolt into the existing holes, or do I drill new ones? Of course I'd run the bolt from the outside, and not the other way around like the factory does. Do you happen to know the amount of shimming required to correct the D.line angle after such a flip?:D

nope havent done it, and no, the bolts dont line up.. and i cant remember if any bolt holes are really close.. if they are, i would put a .25" plate on the back side of the frame.. As for what i have, i just have the 4" lift springs and blocks.. plan is to mount some 94+ 60" 1/2 ton springs under the frame :flipoff2:

is there any downside to putting the springs under the frame? sizes maybe a lil more sway in the corners??

Front hangers for the rear springs used at the rear of the rear springs with a shackle flip will NOT give you 4" lift - more like 2". This is because the factory rear hangers are considerably longer (ca. 4") than the front ones. There are several methods for what you want to do. One is to just pull the shackle, torch the bottom out of the hanger, and drop it through - see coloradok5 for this process on a GM; Dodges are the same. You could also buy a set of new brackets from offroad design; they list them for Dodges as under development. You could also just get some 1/4" plate and weld your own.

I looked at doing springs under the frame on mine but it will interfere with the fuel tank. I suppose that just spacing it away from the frame would help, but it was easier to just get new rear springs.

I've done it. It's on my truck right now. It gives exactly 2" of lift. I used one of the existing holes for one of the top bolts (I don't remember which) on each side to like up the bracket and just drilled 3 new holes on each side. Works pretty good, but I'm inboarding springs on mine in the future and will go with 60's or 63" springs.

If you want more lift just use the brackets and get 2" and run a little longer shackle. The factory one is only 4" in length. A 6" shackle would work pretty weel and add another inch of lift. Anything longer than that and I think you'd be eating up bushings because Dodge used the sorry 1" bushings.

As far as the ORD shackle flip kit being under development, I wouldn't expect to ever see one. Especially not in the forseeable future. I've talked to Stephen about this several times and there is really not enough demand to produce the brackets. Not when Chevy's outnumber Dodge offroaders.
