I hate my 345!!!!!

Spent all day tinkering with it and got virtually NO WHERE.

Did everything the book asked me to do and it still backfires like a muther fawker!!! :mad3:

I think I'm gonna just forget about it and start building the Caddy engine.

BAD NEWS IS...The wifes last day of work is this Wed, and she DOESN'T have a new job yet so cash it tight which means the scout is probably gonna SIT till next summer, or longer :(

Cliffy, when does it back fire? At idle or coming on or off the gas?

Cliffy [JD]
07-27-2002, 05:40 PM
well I must have fucked something up, because it used to be just when accelerating but I just went and parked it it was backfiring like every 4 seconds

Maybe I need to rebuild this carb again!!!

I'm so frustrated, I've never had problems like this before.

I might just stick my SBC 350 in it for now! :(

Have you checked for vac leaks? BTW been there.... spent a month trying to figure out why my engine wouldnt run for shit, checked for vac leaks numerous times using propane etc. Finally pulled the heads to get a cracked head fixed and found the intake manifold gasket ripped, it was leaking into the crank case  good luck man

Well now that I've calmed down about the situation, I think I'm gonna take my carb down to Colorado and test it out on my buddies 350, if it works good there at least I know it's FOR SURE not the carbs problem, then I can start to try and figure out what's up with the engine. If I can figure that out, then I'll swap my 350 in.

sounds like vacuum leak to me, my motor home was backfiring like that, turns out I had a burnt vacuum line and bad egr valve, one way to check for vacuum leak on intake is a can of starting fluid, squirt intake down, if idle changes you found it, you probably did that all ready, another thing is base gasket on carb, ive ran into that one more than once, well good luck:D

Just for kicks before you give up have you done a compression test to see if you have a dead cylinder. Maybe the cam has gone away..........

Well whatever it is, it's not worth my time. I'm gonna swap my SBC 350 in just to save myself the headache! Yes swapping motors will be easier for me. I've done dozens of engine swaps, mostly caddy engines into early 80's midsized GM's. I'm sure this will be no problem for me.

PS: I'll post pics for those of you who were asking about 350 swaps in Scouts. Specifically for the motor mounts.

This will probably happen w/in the next month for sure, since I HAVE to get this running for when I move.

Gee, Cliffhanger, I don't know what the problem is...

Since my TWO BARREL 345 did just fine dragging 14,500lbs around the Mountains.. piston slap, lifter tick (OK, maybe more than a tick..) high ambient temps..

http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/gallery/albums/album22/DCP_0002_002.sized.jpg

Maybe you should just put a 2bbl on it and save the QuadraJunk for a Chubby.

:D

FWIW, my truck started chugging from time to time as we got closer to home. Not sure if the timing has walked (still running points, and the octane requirement increased) or if it's something else - like a fuel filter gettin' plugged..

Sounds like you need to come down here and pick up a 345/727/D20 (adapter only, I'm keeping the 20) for free :D:D All you have to do is pull it!!!

Well if I land a job in AZ (god forbid...it's FREAKIN hot there) maybe I'll bring it down for ya......if Tom doesn't want it and if the wife doesn't blow a gasket about it, that's a BIG maybe!

Where are you located, Cliffy?

About 8hrs from you TORC. Scottsbluff, NE. Bring a cherry picker, otherwise I have a forklift :D:D

I know it's about 8-10 hrs (depending on MPH) because I've made the trip 4 times for Xerox training :D

Cliff,

I had the same problem last year, it would start easy sometimes, start hard other times, then start hard at all times, backfire through the carb at acceleration, etc. etc.

Skeetshooter and I, after a couple of days scratching our heads, pulled the camshaft to find two completely flat lobes and a couple others rounded off.

We did a quick swap, only changed the front bearing out  , because we didn't want to pull the engine, new cam shaft, lifters, etc. and ever since it has started and run as good as any G.M. engine I have ever owned. The only reason I would ever swap in another make of power train would be to lose some WEIGHT.

But I will stick with the IH engine because it takes alot of abuse to smoke a 700 lb chunk of iron.

For all of you who "KNOW" what the problem might be, You are the PERFECT candidates to come get this engine.

I'm not looking for answers to the problem anymore. JUST COME GET IT!!!

PS it's got a new CAP, ROTOR, COIL, PLUGS, and it's got a 4bbl intake!!!

COME GET IT :D:D:D

I wouldn't mind a running 345/727 combo, but I *just* got back from being down that way, and have plenty to keep me occupied for a bit..

And I was just told of a couple 200 pickups I can have if I just drive to Idaho and drag them home.. *sigh* :)

I'll be in Billings, MT on 9/14-15.. maybe you could meet me there and give the motor to me for my birthday. :-)

OK....

Let's see this weekend is my 1 year anniversary so that's out!

...Uhmm...hmmm...I'm attending a family reunion on the weekend of the 11th. I suppose if you cam sat and we did it all then, it would work. Otherwise the following weekend would be best.

PS: Remember to bring a cherry picker. Using the fork lift *might* not be as easy.

Whatever, just get your ass up here NEXT sat or the following weekend. (You bring it)

I'm not going anywhere unless it's where I'm moving to, and then I won't be taking the engine with me. It'll be at the scrap yard or with someone else.
