Dimple Dies without a lathe

I don't have a lathe or know anyone who does. Is there a cheap technique to make dimple dies that does not require a lathe?

Somebody posted up some booty fab methods once before. IIRC one was a piece of lumber with holes bored and a trailer hitch ball being pounded in... I also seem to recal something about a couple of big sockets or something. Long and short of it, is to have a functional dimple, the hack way is not the way to do it. You can order dies for very reasonable prices now. Why not just buy a few you think you will use?
