Now there should be a lot of 'yesses'. Hoping for some first or second hand experiences, not "a friends, Aunts, neighbors, boss broke one once" kinda knowledge.

I didn't vote because I don't have 31 spline axles......but I've never broken my 7.5" 28 spline axles with 33's. I have yet to break a 44 shaft too. Guess I don't wheel hard enough.

I do have a dana 60 that's going in before I step up to 36's.

I also can't vote as my EB still is running the 28 spline. I just stepped(ok it's a small step:rolleyes: :D ) up to 28 spline alloy shafts with the detroit locker in the rear. but I'm still only on 31"x10.5" BFG AT's. When mine gets built I plan on jumping to 35 spline and forget about it.

The only 31's I ever ran were on a Warn 9" FF kit with a spool. They were 30 at the hub end. Ran the Con with only one rear hub working, in three wheel drive. All the push was on one side and they held up fine with 36's. I've got a 35 spline 60 back there now, don't want to take any chances.:flipoff2:

Ive run that full Floater kit with 44's for 6 years, yeah mud not rocks, but it has never broke, with 1 ton hubs........

Now before I did this, I broke axles at the flange 2 times, one just driving normal, and the other doing a burnout.........

Im running stock 31 spline on 36"s with no breakage yet... of course its still sitting in the garage but when I do wheel it I dont expect any breakage :flipoff2:

K heres 'now' situation. 5.0L, 35's, whopping 21.89 crawl (auto)
Heres new situation. Built 5.0L, 35's, 244.06 crawl (stick)

Twisting 28 spline 'MOSERS' within a year.(3/8 turn throughout axle) with current set-up.
contemplating 35 spline 9" because I'm not sure 31's will hold up.
Do custom 31 spliners realy take a beating??
Any other options I mighta missed??
OTHER THAN GOIN D60, D70, 14B.

then spent 2x the money for a d70ff with 35 splines.

with a 14 bolt you need 35's just to keep from dragging the ground.

Are you asking about an 8.8 or a 9" axle? I've personally seen two shafts break at the bearing retainer. Here's one of them-

When I did my suspension along with the bigger tires, I didn't even want to bother finding out how long my 8.8" would last so I swapped in a 10.25".

Current Question is for 9".
My first bust was at the flange, right at the bearing retainer. That's what got the 'MOSER' axles in there. But now they are twisting. Contemplating 35 spline for the strength of a D60,D70,14B but without the clearance or weight issues. And no change in rims/tires.

WRONG! I got my 35 spline FF D70 from PNP just like most people get their 14 bolts. The only difference in costs are the detroit lockers. The 14 bolt is $300 and the D70 is $550. Other than that they are the same prices or R&P, bearings and disk break conversions.

I think its easier to get better ground clearance with the 70.

I ran a 31 spline 9" witha spool for a long time on the street and trail. My buddy still has this exact setup with no problems. I would swap to 35 spline just for ease of mind.

You can also stuff 33 spline semi floating axles in a stock 9" carrier. They are pretty damn big.

I should have made my post a little clearer and said the detroits are 2X as much.

Why does that look like a Dana44?

My Moser 31 spliners are hanging in there. Can't say the same for the ARB I had. Blew up its internals, but the shafts were fine, except for the splines getting chewed up on one by the broken diff parts forcing me to buy a new one:mad:

No problems so far with Currie 31 splines. They are in a '77 EB housing with a Detroit running 36" SXs for about 3 years now.

I broke 2 stock 31 spline shafts...both at the splines. I was only running 35's at the time, but I had a 4 speed and decent 460.

Yup, broke one at the splines. 31 spline Dutchman Alloy shaft in an 8.8. Ford Explorer, 4.0L, 2.48 1st, 2.48 Low range, 4.56 gears, and a factory limited slip.

Haven't broke any 31s but I have replaced 2 factorys; first started to twist at the splines and the second started to strip. This is on a 5K lb EB with a 289, 4.88 spool and 80:1 stick.

I'm saving my pennies, going to 35 spliners and leaving the spares at home.

Several years ago, had driver side rear break at the flange.
Chalked it up to old age/fatique. Don't subject it to the rocks
as much as you western/southern guys do tho. Imagine you
guys are a little harder on them.
