: noob ?... what keeps the axles in the 9" rear end??
LSRGreg 07-26-2008, 05:02 PM Ok.. so maybe i am having a brain fart here.. but how are the axles held in place on the 9" rear end?? I know they have to be pulled out before the 3rd member can be removed right? And looking at the exploded views, its looks like there are caps with 4 bolts that hold the bearings into the outer axle tubes.. but how is the bearing kept on the inner axle shaft? just a press fit?? and is this all that keeps the axles from getting pulled out when driving? i gotta be missing something here..
I have never pulled apart this type of rear end before.. so forgive me if these questions seem totally retarded... and thanks for the help!
funinthemud 07-26-2008, 05:41 PM yes the 4 bolts on the outer tube hold the axles in. its much stonger that its replacement the 8.8 that uses c clips. as for the bearing it rests against a raised collar i guess you could call it.
hope this helps

LSRGreg 07-28-2008, 06:59 AM :flipoff2: You can't see how its all held together by just looking at it, and i don't want to take it apart... just curious how it works.. :flipoff2:

problems with comprehesion?
LSRGreg 07-28-2008, 09:11 AM problems with comprehesion?
Wow.. obviously you have problems with comprehension.. no shit the bearing retainer holds it all in.. you must of missed my response that said thanks.. :flipoff2: but how does the bearing retainer attach to the axle and keep the bearing from getting pulled off the axle?? all you fawking genius's with the brilliant replies can't seem to tell me that.. :D :stirthepot:
So the bearing gets pressed on the axle.. then a retainer goes on the axle to hold the bearing in place, correct??? So then how does this retainer hold the bearing in place?? that's all i am looking for.. is it threaded, have set screws? a press fit? is there a groove machined in the axle, and the retainer clamps around it? what?
CHOPPEDBII 07-28-2008, 11:12 AM the question has already been answered.
you need to one of three things....
1)stop and read
2)go look your self (it will take 5 min.)
3)go away
Oatmeal 07-28-2008, 12:08 PM The bearing retainer is pressed on (takes about a 12 ton press) and believe it or not it keeps it there. The ID of the retainer is actually smaller than the shaft so, it actually stretches to fit......think of it as a high strength rubber band;)----------Hans

Have you pulled the axle apart? Looked at it? Have you read what has been written by people in this thread? Once you figure out how to pull your head out of your ass, maybe then you should try pulling an axle shaft. Judging by your questions, you aren't going to be capable of changing the bearings anyhow, so take the shaft to a good machine shop, tell them you want new bearings installed along with new bearing retainers

Thanks for the great reply.. that is all i was looking for.. i appreciate it.

wow.. maybe i can stoop myself down to your level.. .. hmm.. i mentioned above that i don't want to take it apart.. i was just curious.. so no.. i haven't pulled the axle apart. don't want to go to all that trouble.. just a simple explaination was all i was after... but obviously that was way above your head.. I did read all the replies.. i got the 1st couple answers (and thanked for the replies) but that lead me to another question.
nobody said anything about how the retainer was held on the axle shaft until oatmeal just replied..
my head was never in my ass.. but thanks for lookin out. There is nothing wrong with my axle.. another good reason not to take it apart.. i just wanted to know how it was held together, simple as that.. yeah. pretty sure i never said anything about my axle being screwed up.. so no need to get new bearings and repair it.. but you must have missed all that since you were so worried about trying to call me an idiot.. but thanks for the help anyways.. willys101.. i hope you made yourself feel better by trying to make me look like an idiot. :flipoff2: You can go crawl back into your hole now.
For the few that did answer my questions.. i appreciate it!
sceep 07-28-2008, 01:39 PM correct me if im wrong, but aren't ALL rear axles, that are non c-clip type, retained in this manner??
now i'm going to wait in anticipation until LSRG's next post.. "HowTF do i remove this bastard bearing retainer!!??!! "
LSRGreg 07-28-2008, 02:01 PM Damn. what's with you asshats?? :D i think i am going to go cry in the corner now.. :grinpimp:
can't a guy just ask a simple question?? i bet you all popped out of your Mom's womb knowing everything huh... my bad.. i forgot that some of us were this lucky.
Forgive me for wanting to increase my knowledge..
The only rear axle i have pulled apart in my lifetime was a GM 14 bolt full floater.. and thats totally different.. so :flipoff2: to all you guys that are soo freakin smart.
shit.. i totally forgot this was in the Ford section.. no wonder.. your all pissed because you have to deal with your Ford taking a dump on you all the time.. i totally appologize for responding how i did.. no need to make you feel any worse about your miserable lives. :smokin:

willys101_4lo 07-28-2008, 02:21 PM Whats with us asshats?
We get tired of lazy fuckers like you that come in here, ask dumb ass questions and expect us to teach you basic concepts. Press fitting is VERY simple, very old school tech, and the fact that it hasn't trickled down to Lazycuntsville isn't our fault. Neither is the fact that you are too goddamned lazy to either pull the axle apart, or look it up in a Chilton's/Haynes/factory service manual.
This isn't remedial auto shop for douchebags. This is Pirate4x4, where lazy asses are flamed for asking dumbass questions. Either get fuckin used to it, or go the fuck away :shaking:

We're smart because we got off our fawking asses, stopped trying to solve every stupid ass little thing with a keyboard, took the mother fawker apart and looked at it... said "oh that's how that works... and put it back together" :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

CHOPPEDBII 07-28-2008, 02:45 PM I think this should have been posted in the general forum...but thats just me. no one flames you in that forum, so instaed of comming in here and acting like an idiot when you asked the wrong question in the wrong forum. maybe you should just let this go and make sure next time you post in the right section...just my 2 cents.
I am not trying to be an ass but you have to understand it from the stand point of all the guys who do help all threw the forum. they get tired of helping people who don't think about a post before they post it. you wern't even willing to go out and take 5 min. to pull a drum off and look or google how to pull an axle shaft.
LSRGreg 07-28-2008, 03:19 PM I see what your saying.. but if its soo hard to answer these lame questions, then don't.. simple as that. Don't forget the title.. NOOB ?... So if you hate noob questions, don't read it.. it was made very clear right at the begining before you even had to spend the effort clicking on my post. And its a Ford rear end question.. so figured Ford would be the area to post it.
thats the great thing about this place.. we can find out stuff without having to go to the effort to going outside in the 115 degree weather, pulling a tire, removing a rotor, draining the diff fluid.. etc etc.. just to find out an answer that takes less than 1 minute to type out.. and for the record, i did read up on some installs, and some exploded views before i even posted, but they didn't say anything about what i was looking for.. so thats why i posted it.
I know i was being lazy.. but everyone that chimmed in spent more time trying to tell me off, than just saying what i was searching for.. so thats cool.
I could care less if you guys gotta flame. i get a kick out of seeing it. and i think you should be able to take a little back too.. it was all in fun.. sorry if all of your panties got twisted up..
I found my answer, and got to flame back. i think it was all good.. thanks for the points and help..

Truth. I've heard about him having major failure way up in a hairy trail; and through sheer ingenuity and the duct tape, bailing wire, JB weld, and giant black dildo that he carries in his tool box he's made it home safe and sound.
Kudos
