So I am looking at buying a 1 1/4 ton ex military cucv truck. its an 84, 6.2, th400.

what are common problems to look for on these trucks motor wise?

I dont have much experience with the diesels. so i would like to know how much trouble they are. I called the guy he said the motor runs great.

I know the common problems with these trucks though and the things to look for frame, drivetrain and body wise. I just need help with motor issues that eveyone who has a 6.2 has had to deal with.

thanks guys!

The 6.2 is a pretty durable and trouble-free motor. Most of the problems I have seen are simply because people don't understand them or performed the required maintenance on them.

The CUCV (military) trucks do have a funky 24V electrical system, and you do need to keep an eye on the crank balancer because if it fails it can take out the crank.

thats good to hear. I figured it was a relatively good motor.

I have heard some stories of the heads cracking...anyone know about that?

The crank balancer as in harmonic balancer correct?

If Im correct that engine should have the J heads, they don't seem to have as much problem with cracks.
The biggest problem is that they max out at 55 with stock tires.

It would make a damn good wheeler.

so turn the pump up some and get some bigger tires.

the speed is more of a over gearing issue than a power issue.

The ones that I know of have a 4" lift and 37" tires, no problem on the power.

my buddies 8" with 39" did pretty well for itself with nothing more than the pump turned up a quater turn.

Exactly. 4.56 gears and 30" tires don't allow very much speed until you are hitting the redline. I've got a couple of speeding tickets to prove that a 6.2 is capable of going much faster with the proper gears.....one was for going almost 80 in a 65 mph zone and that was just cruising.

suhweet!

i was worried for a second about it being a slow ass truck. i know diesels make power and with the banks turbo kit, a pump and exhaust, it should be pretty quick and make even more power.

the truck is running 4.56's and 36" tires if im not mistaken.

I was planning a NV4500 swap in the future....or would getting an OD be a better choice with the th400?

I plan to use this truck more for the hauling and highway aspect then a hardcore 4 wheel drive.
i wanted the diesel for no smog/power, and the 1 ton for the axles and durability.

as long as it can do at least 80 i wont have any trouble haha.

I will probably be hauling a bed full of bikes and a trailer full of quads...so i wont have trouble with its towing capacity.
