I have a 79 standard cab F350 with a rusty body, the good news is everything under the body is in good shape except the C6. I took it to a shop to have the trans. rebuilt and was wondering if anyone here has ever used the lower first gear from an Inline 6 engine/transmission with the V8 set up?
The truck will be used both on/ off road.
p.s. I just got my new power steering pump in the mail, a rebuilt Saganaw 20-6244! They are getting hard to find with the reservoir attached, I can't believe I found one.

only the later e40d has a diffrent panet set, and yes it has been done.

I've driven an early bronco with a stock worn out c-6 and a rebuilt c-6 with the e4od gears and what a difference. Kept cruising rpm's down but rocketed off the line like a rice rocket. It is a very worthwhile mod, I'll do it to mine if I swap in a c-6:smokin:

it puts the gears at 2.71 first and a 1.53 second - its something like 10% for first -
factory is 2.46 - 1.46 - 1.1
mine is getting one

Sounds great! Do you know of any write up's for this mod? I don't know much about auto transmissions and would like to have a better understanding of what is done.
Did it work out well when driven on the street?
What about carring a load in the bed or towing a light trailer?
My truck will be driven on the road as a DD for the next year, afterward it will be mostly an offroad toy.

I would definitely swap an E4od gear set into your tranny. We put that gear set into my C6 years ago and love it. That extra bit of power in the low end is awesome.

If i remember right this is a low buck mod and the mod is stronger than stock.

It isn't going to do anything for cruise rpm, as 3rd gear is still 1:1. A better converter and a tranny rebuild is most likely what caused the lower cruise rpm.

i think he ment better accel without changing the rear end gears - so its like having lower axle gears - but with a good cruz rpm

yep its been done before, there was a write up in 4wheeler or Petersons several years ago. Here is the link to a place that has the tranny rebuild kits and the lower gear sets:
http://www.broaderperformance.com/c6_transmission_parts.htm
if ya got it torn done that far ya might as well put a rebuild kit in it but thats just my 2 pennies
Anyone have a junkyard list? More info
Only write up I found is no longer.
