: Sterling rear ?
Gozuki 07-28-2002, 01:42 PM What is the cutoff year between 10.25 and 10.5? And what kind of ratio would I expect to find in a mid 90s F250 4X4? The tag says 3L55, which I hope doesn't mean 3.55s....And no, I couldn't turn it, the tires where on the ground, axle still attached to the tcase...TIA, Mike
Rogue Bronco 07-28-2002, 02:16 PM 3L55 should mean 3.55 gears with a limited slip.

Agreed
Rogue Bronco 07-28-2002, 02:57 PM Altho my diff tag reads staight 3.08 gears no limited.
Some how it got translated to 4.56 gears and a detriot:D :D .
I don't trust older diff tags myself, but being a 'newer' vehicle the chances of it being right are much better.
Most people toss the tags once the cover comes off. I put mine back on just to fawk with people:D
Gozuki 07-28-2002, 06:26 PM Is there a carrier split, or can I use 4.56 gears on this LS?
saf-t scissors 07-28-2002, 06:55 PM There is no carrier split.
10.25 was from mid 80s (85??) through the 97 MY trucks (F250 & F350). The 99 MY trucks got the 10.50 with the metric pattern and disc brakes.
3.55 and 4.10 are the only ratios I have ever seen for the 10.25. There might have been others, but those are the most common.
Rogue Bronco 07-28-2002, 07:01 PM No 'FORD' axles have carrier breaks.
Why U ask?? Because FORDS rule:D :D
fordman7795 07-28-2002, 08:36 PM i thought you had to change carriers on an 8.8
BurnedBronco 07-29-2002, 07:03 AM 8.8 doesnt have a carrier break.
sterling FF's were used in 87-97 F250HD's and f 350s.

Wow, I just noticed this thing called the "Search" button. That must be a new feature????

saf-t scissors 07-29-2002, 07:14 AM Keith, who told you the R&P were interchangeable between the 10.5 and the 10.25?
I thought the whole difference between the two was an improved pinion location, which would suggest that the gears weren't swappable, and the housings were different shapes.

Drivetrain Direct told me the R&P are interchangeable, so long as you use the appropriate carrier (which are apparently interchangeable also). Someone else confirmed this - or something like this - in another thread about the 10.25. I'll see if I can find it.
Here ya go:

Boy, I really like that search button, I hope they keep that around :flipoff2:
Do a search for "Sterling 10.25"
At the risk of stating the obvious, anyone who wants to do anything with any of this should call someone like Drivetrain Direct to confirm that what you want to do will work, before shelling out the $$$$$$$$$$
dogbender 07-30-2002, 04:28 PM you can put a 10.25 r&p in a 10.5 housing with a special pinion bearing . call randy's ring and pinion.

I have a 1986 version with 456's, so they are out there......
strong_like_tractor 08-20-2002, 08:48 AM 3.08,3.55,3.73,4.10,4.30,4.56,4.88,5.13 is that enough for you? I know that 10.25 gears will fit a 10.5; but am not sure if it works the other way around.
