: 79 hp 44 question
Bump&Grind 07-28-2008, 08:24 PM I got a question about the inner c's on the cast ends on a hp 44, can I remove the c's and retube the axle with a new pipe on both ends? Has anyone done this? I'm going to go as thick a pipe as possible to gain some strength. I forgot to tear it down Friday to get a better look so I figured I'd ask you guys.
ibleedblue1385 07-28-2008, 08:26 PM I believe the 78' and 79' axles the "c" is actually part of the cast, unlike older models that are welded on.
Bump&Grind 07-28-2008, 08:29 PM Go figure, thought I had a cheap idea, what other inner c can I use then that has the right camber?

I think you are thinking about the wedges, the "c" should be removeable, there is no tube inside the wedges on the 78-79 1/2 axles, of course none of this matters if he has a 44 out of a supercab or f-250(leaf sprung).
Look up Mr. Ns site for all the dana 44 info anyone should ever need.

Bump&Grind 07-28-2008, 08:38 PM this is a bronco 44
should be doable
wouldnt go more then 1/2" thick tube, even that is overkillish
ibleedblue1385 07-28-2008, 08:40 PM you are correct! i read it wrong...sorry.
Bump&Grind 07-28-2008, 08:42 PM thanks guys
broncomania79 07-28-2008, 08:48 PM 76/77 f150 weld on c
78/79 f150/bronco cast on c
joe_and_jeep 07-28-2008, 08:57 PM The tube diameter on the cast on C ax;e is different than the others. I tried using a cast on C center section to make a passenger drop HP and it was different than the donor tubes.
Bump&Grind 07-28-2008, 09:07 PM I'm not too worried about the different diameters, I have access to a lathe so I can turn the tube down to fit the pumpkin and/or c

Brewchief:DThanks for the link.
You should be able to find a good housing core for $50-250. Might be cheaper and easier in the end to go this route.
elarsen 07-29-2008, 10:35 PM I re tubed an HP44 with the cast wedges. The C's are not cast into the housing, they are removable. I cut down the passenger side to match a dodge short axle & re tubed the drivers side. It is still working fine.
One thing I noticed was that the center chunk is much lighter than a Chevy or Dodge D44. Not sure how much weaker it would be.
jopes 07-29-2008, 10:45 PM why not just pick up a 77 or older Dana 44 housing from a F-150. solid tubes and they are like 1/2" thick.
one reason is the cost is far greater, here at least

im thinkin schedule 80 pipe, find a size that is slightly larger than the i.d. of the pumpkin , then turn down the o.d. of the pipe. press the pipe in and weld.
scott037 07-30-2008, 12:52 PM me and my friend just did this get a cheap chevy front end cut the tubes out and turn down the end of the tubes. the v and drill for plug welds the tubes on your hp 44 and the donor tubes and the insert. cut the ends to desired lengths. oh you can also use the ends on the chevy dana 44 and you for stuff will bolt up. or you can get brand new shelby tubing to do this with to. it seems to work fo us
Bump&Grind 07-30-2008, 06:37 PM So I can use chebby c's? I thought they they were different. I got access to a pile of 10 bolt fronts and 44 I can salvage parts from.
gulfcrestinc 07-30-2008, 07:37 PM if you have acess to a lathe cut the cast c's off and machine a relief for your tubin. the if you need the c's get some new one to put where ever you need them.
