Ok, now the tow rig is acting up. 2000 with 5.3L. When I turn the key over it just cranks and cranks and doesn't want to fire. I'll back the key off and then on again and it may start, sometimes I have to go 3 times until it will start. It runs fine after that. I only have 58k on it now. Any ideas? Fuel pump? Ignition? Fuel Pressure regulator? Any help would be great.

I'd say take it to your local mechanic and have him plug it in and it will probably tell you.

First remove the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line if there is fuel in the vacuum line replace the regulator. If there is no fuel in the regulator install a fuel pressure gauge and check to see if the fuel pressure on the gauge drops to zero after you shut the truck off. If it does most likely is the fuel pump.

Its the check ball valve in your fuel pump more than likely. I had this issue on a '99 Silverado and Ive seen it on several other late model GM trucks.
Basically what happens is that valve is bleeding off fuel pressure and there isnt any fuel in the lines. Once the fuel hits the rails and injectors it'll fire up.
You can confirm this by putting a fuel pressure guage on it, turn the key on, but dont start the truck, see if you get any pressure at all, keep turning the key on/off until you get pressure, then start the truck. You should have somewhere around 50-55psi. Shut the truck off, and watch the pressure guage, if it starts to immediately bleed off, then you'll know.

Thanks. I was leaning towards the fuel pump. Does the entire assembly need to be replaced, or is there an internal part to repair this? I don't want to sound like a tight-ass, it's just that there is only 58k on the truck, but things do go out.

Try changing the fuel filter first! Unless you already have. Then start with the pump, etc. Most time s it just a clogged filter.
