Headed down this weekend to prerun with my buddy who is driving the 12 car the last leg.

WICKED GRAVITY VIDEO will be out on course, from the Thursday time trial on up to northern Nevada on Friday, working for the TV show. I would be happy to take any witty and intelligent soundbites from any team, either in the pits, or at tech/contingency. I will have a green BITD media vest - and I am easy to spot -- the big hefty guy with a tiny camera -- they told me they have to match camera size with penis size, soooo, I get a small camcorder :(

I am sitting here in my living room, in my undies, watching Dr. Phl with one eye, typing with the other, and looking at the 2008 V2R Official COURSE MAP with the third eye!!! Yep, I have the course map -- but will get killed if I share it before it comes out this weekend. I signed a waiver and work contract release today with Sopwith Motorsports/BITD/PinnedTV: HEre is part of what it says:

"Participant (me) may be working in environments that may be extremely cold, hot dusty, windy, rainy, snowing, prone to earthquakes, fire , flood, windstorms, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, electromagnetic energies, or any acts of God or nature not forseen in the body of this agreement, be inhabited by venomous or poisonous creatures which may strike Participant at any time, all of the above carrying the possibility of causing injury or death to Participant"

Wheww ... scary stuff! I am OK with the dust and wind, but the volcanic eruptions are hard to shake off! They did not even mention attack by the Amargosa Toad! They can pack a punch, so I am told.

See you there -- everyone be safe.

Hey WGV, I'll probably be pitting/fueling around Top Gun.

Here was my job description:"Need a couple of volunteers to man the chase truck and fuel tower at the BITD V to R race. We will be fueling and pitting at one location, to be determined later. This will probably be a “roughing it trip” do to the lack of rooms in Beatty, plan on bringing sleeping bags. "

I didn't get the dust/natural disaster warning. Maybe I'll get "hazard pay"?!

WickedGravityVideo
07-30-2008, 08:04 PM
The Top Gun pits is where the racers come through the series of giant rollers after Rawhide pits -- this is where someone will get motion sickness if they are prone to it. According to the warnings I got, I would say to not worry about the dust, but rather focus on the volcanic eruptions - it really hurts (and burns) when volcanic lava drops out of the sky onto you. I would suggest bringing a 12 volt fan to cool you down if you have to camp out in Beatty -- it is pretty hot at night there. You could always lay down extra $$$ at the brothels there for a place to "sleep". haha

We are all patiently waiting for the Cortez video of Shannon blowing up his Ring&Pinon...go back to work.

I have enough kids-all girls 24, 16, 13, and they are draining my bank accounts...I'm about 99.9% confident that having anymore kids is impossible, but I did visit the Spearmint Rhino in City of Industry on Saturday night celebrating the Carnage Crew Championship Season...and I left after spending about $250 bucks too...

But in case any else wants to know about Nevada's booming business...you can visit http://www.nvlb.com/home.htm for the latest up to date information.

Go back to work...we all want to see your footage!

PS...I'm putting in a good word for you with Cissy Baldwin at CORR! ROTFLMAO...not sure that would help, but did you send her a birthday gift last week to try and get back your credentials?

I'm normally a crawler. I've only watched dessert racing on youtube / videos. I've been to the sand dunes a couple times, and very much enjoyed it. I'd love to see something like this live. I live down in Sacramento, CA so I might be close enough to head up there for a few hours during the day. If I wanted to be a spectator, where can I go? Any thoughts / advice / links to web sites?

Coming from Rocklin, if you wanted to watch some of the faster trucks in the evening, the week's pit has a good access road along the course for a way's to see some rough sections from. and it's only an hour out of reno.

The Weeks pit is where I will be, you will have about 3-4 hours of daylight to see the first bikes and cars/trucks, then its on and off all night long.

Its a great spot to watch. Take highway 50 past Dayton to Silver Springs, south on alternate highway 95 about 8 miles as soon as you cross the river it will be your first left.

The first bike will be through around 5pm (on friday) give or take an hour.

First off congratulations to the Torchmate and Shaffers crew. What a race.

Thank you to Dust Junkies for giving my first experience in Desert Racing... It won't be my last.

Still driving home, but just wanted check in, it was a siezed distributor bearing that took us out. Amazing racing... We fought back from dead last, dug out of 4 silt beds.... When I saw Dave and Mike in that silt bed, my first thought was to stop.... Then Scott reminded me we hadn't had a clutch in 100 miles. If we would have stopped, we would never have gotten out.

1705 never quit and deserve the win, I look foward to racing against you in the future.

More later

Holy crap, that was something!!! Right at that point Dave was nodding off in the passenger seat. I was on auto pilot. That last part of the course was like a freakin' rock crawling trail. I can not believe that the car held together. Nice work to Mike and the whole Shaffers Offroad crew for putting that thing together the week before the race. I thought that my rock buggy takes a beating. That is nothing compared to what a race like this does to a vehicle.

Great work and congrats to the rest of the team! I had a ball. Even though I may not be able to walk or move my neck for a week.

 Bill and I had a few choice words when you slowed down, then just drove off while we were sitting there digging... Then later we were told you had no clutch, we kinda felt bad...

Then we got you back right after pit 7 when we saw your rig stopped, and you got us back again when the McDonalds i had for dinner in Tonopah decided it wanted to make an emergency exit :(

Since we had take our hood off ar Pit 2 to help with heat issues, the silt blowing up through the engine compartment was made it really hard to see over about 65-70mph. so we just tried to chase you down in the rough and technical sections on the way to pit 9. Somewhere after pit 8 we lost our radio, later to find out the antenna came unplugged

When we got to pit 10, they were not going tolet us through because we got there right at closing, after arguing with the guy to the point i wasn't sure if bill was going to come out the window at him or not (thank god for seatbelts) they let us go. We made pit 11 right on time, and got a splash of fuel, and off for the finish. We crossed the line about 7:25, we had until 7:43

The race was awesome! i just woke up from a nice 7 hour nap and am getting ready to go to the awards after party since it is 10 min from home :D

I should add, we had planned to race this race months ago, but the funding wasn't really there, and with only a week until the race, and the jeep still broken from Primm, Bill from Torchmate, and Greg, asked it if was really possible to do it. I told them it was, but it would mean working until 2-3am every night until race day. And we did!!!

With all of the help we had in the shop from Garrett, who was there every night, and all weekend leading up to the race, Josh, Kevin and Mike who showed up every night after work, we got it done! And for all there help chasing, pitting, and keeping the rig alive for the race. You guy's rock!

And of course all of our amazing sponsor's who made this happen!

1st Car yard sale within site of pit 4 resulting in the Jaws of life, and a helo ride for the 1st leg co dog. Ending my day.( I was getting in at 5 or 6) Roof is peeled off the car but its all good and should be fixed by the end of next week. Co dog is doing well and trying to fondle the nurses in Vegas.

Car 2 winner of the sportsman class by over a half hour I'm told.

Car 3 DNF with a fuel problem, somewhere past half way.

Real bummer about car 1 we were leading sportsman by about an hour, and mixing it up with the 1600, and 5 unlimited cars when he did the 60 mph lawn dart impression. The Kingpin was real happy with a 1,2,3 run until the cart wheel. Pretty fun being a hierd gun...... I could get used to this.:smokin:

Good time outside the trip to Tonopah medical center. Thanks Tool Guy for driving us around the Nevada desert. Not sure when we are racing again, but planning for Baja starts weds night. Its looking like a rear start in class one.:D

Class 1 lites in the sportsman class, old school dirtbiker Buster Lawrence needed a naughty nurse, they were fresh out at the Cherry patch, and the Cottintail ranch was closed, so he figured a copter ride was in order.

He is doing fine and should be home in a day or two. The guy is one tough son of a b!tch. Car held up extremely well, but Buster has been banged up a few times over the years and no one wanted to take a chance, so they popped the roof off. It should be fixed by the end of next week.

Tonopah EMS is awsome Thanks for the amazing response time.

How far did it fly? I hear it was flying upside down a long way. Driver called the pit seconds before the lawn dart and said they were cruising it in at 60 + MPH.

A side note:

Driver had an R3 on and walked away, next day at breakfast with very little sleep I asked how he felt. Not sore at all, just a little bit stiff in the neck from sleeping funny in a chair most the night.

Co dog had a neck collar on........ You do the math. Head and neck restraint is the way to go.

Congrats to all that entered the beast called Vegas To Reno, and more props to those that finished. I was out on course, shooting video for the first 250 miles -- intense stuff! Saw Trophy Truck #44 rollover just outside of pit 5. Spent quite a while at Pit 4, but missed the Class 1 Lite incident - saw this vehicle on a trailer, though - wow! Hope both are OK. Also, saying a prayer for the moto guys that went down and were airlifted to Reno hospital. I will have some time trial and race video up, mostly TTs, 1s, and Pro Trucks, up in a day or two.

Not so high, but two quick rolls, then lost behind hill. Sounds like Medic response was fast on the whole course, good job BITD.

When I saw Dave and Mike in that silt bed, my first thought was to stop.... Then Scott reminded me we hadn't had a clutch in 100 miles. If we would have stopped, we would never have gotten out.

I have to second DSI in saying that we were a little pissed when you guys cruised right on by when we were stuck. It being my first desert race too, I was thinking "oh, I see how it is". Our radio was out, so we did not know that you were minus a clutch until after we went by. That was the only reason that we did not stop when we passed you on the side of the trail later. We found out about the clutch at that next pit. Sorry about that.

You guys ran a hell of a race. It was a lot more fun going head to head with you than it was racing the clock. I hope I get the chance to do it again. I did not like seeing those police lights off in the distance in front of us, but it sure was one hell of a motivator. :D

Just got back to phoenix, what a great race! But a long one! Well the little 1919 Jagged X / Polaris Racing RZR did it again finishing first in the UTV class.
The drivers and the crew worked their asses off, But it all paid off. We had some problems after hitting a huge boulder in the silt which bent a front control arm bolt, That was an easy fix but just out of pit 10 they hit a 3 foot ledge and broke the same bolt. The drivers removed the whole front corner and three wheeled the RZR 22 miles into pit 11 where we put it all back in place and sent them to the finish. That makes 2 V2R UTV wins in a row. Thank you Polaris Industries and all who helped with the race.

We saw the C1 car after the crash, glad to hear everyone is going to be okay. those little cars are impressive!

Dave and I would have stopped, but that section was sooo silty we would have never gotten out of it with no clutch. It was fun dicing it up with you guys, the last thing we wanted to do it let you guys sit out in the desert without trying to help.

Congratulations on the hard fought finish and win. Having seen first hand how tough it is to finish on time from a rear start, not to mention just finishing the race due to the course itself, it was a great accomplishment.

Congratulations on the win! I really admire those UTV teams. Every time I saw one of them come through the pits, I cheered them on because that has to take some serious guts to ride in them.

Holy crap, that was something!!! Right at that point Dave was nodding off in the passenger seat. I was on auto pilot. That last part of the course was like a freakin' rock crawling trail

It's not hard to fall asleep at 10mph on that goat trail.... really didn't need to call any corners out  On a side note, we should take teh buggies out there and run that wash, it looked pretty sick!

It was alot of fun chasing you guy's down on the highspeed sections from 8 to 9, you were pulling us in the fast parts, but we were catching you in the technical, it would have been interesting to see how it would have went after pit 9, talk about some rough rolling, bouncing crap!

No kidding! That last section was boring and rocky.

I was co dawg, and the driver heads right for a bowling ball sized rock, hits it with both front and rear tires on my side. He looks over at me, then keeps driving. Me...."you were asleep wernt you!?"

Ahhhh Yup.

5 minutes later, he is heading for a bunch of rocks with a nice easy go-around. The last second I yell....ROCKS!

Shit! I was asleep agian!

Just to play it safe I would scream at him every few minutes while we were heading down the mountain towards the finish line. :D

Needless to say we traded seat's for a few miles
