: Range Rover mod comments
road1will 07-28-2002, 04:54 PM ok, after this weekend, the truck needs MAJOR upgrades and repairs. i will give a rundown of the specs of it currently-
1988 Range Rover, 104k miles, vy little rust
stock drivetrain, detroit locker rear (10 spline)
OME 751 front, 764 rear. springs have sagged down to about 1" over stock lift.
rancho 9207 shocks, front, 9005 rear, rovertym mounts
cut to hell and rotted 265/75 mud terrains. oh yeah they are pretty worn too.
RT rock sliders
RT front and rear bumpers.
ok, and now for the problems:
sliders bend the sills upwards so the door scrapes on them
needs more lift and much larger tires
power steering box is JUNK.
and the plan:
put the current 764 rears on the front
buy new 764s for the rear, add spacer as needed
cut fenderwells, sliders, and bumpers to fit Q78 swampers
remove rear locker
fit series 4.7:1 differential assemblies, unlocked
convert to a much better, stronger power steering box
and for the near future (by winter)
fit McNamara center sections with toy 4.88 gears and lockers
alloy 30 spline rear axleshafts
alloy 30 spline front throughout, with D44 ujoints (CTMs, maybe)
and now the comments and suggestions (your turn)
oh yeah and i forgot, the initial plan described above needs to be completed by the weekend of September 14th.
MIKE SLADE i need you to email me.

:shaking: :shaking: Your not taking your own advice I see!
FrankenRover 07-28-2002, 05:15 PM Turn around time on the Mac diffs is not the quickest thing in the world. You might want to go ahead and order.

ps. I know a guy that waited in excess of 6 months for some diffs from him.

well the thing is that this range rover isnt mine, its my dads. and if it were mine, i would go right on ahead and throw in a 44/60, but he doesnt want to have to pay for a welder to do the brackets, and he doesnt trust me to weld them (thats the way he is). so when you factor in the costs of the dana assemblies, then the lockers, gears, fabrication time, and fabricator, this route is a lot cheaper and more than strong enough for 36s.

but was he buying complete third members or just the casting? i would be getting just a pair of castings so it should be a simple crate and ship operation. anyways, i would probably see if i could work something out with Sam as he could get them a lot cheaper i am sure.
Fear Factory 07-28-2002, 06:19 PM I wouldn't do the series 4.7s especially with the Q78 Swampers. What I've seen happen is that due to the spacer ring the ring bolts work themselves out and all hell breaks loose. Also I don't think they're of good enough grade metal and the 10-47 teeth arent's as strong as the 8-38 ring and pinion teeth.
Mount the sliders to the frame, that's the only way to fix the problem. It's not the sliders fault the rocker panels are made of about 14ga. steel. I outlined what I did on the making disco slider thread.
Serious One 07-28-2002, 11:13 PM 9V,
Whattya need?
Don't tell me you're changing your mind again!

I wouldnt bother getting the jac mac castings. Just throw in some complete toy third members. All you got to do is drill some holes and it fits. Im currently doing this right now. Im just sourcing the toy centres at the moment.
And I just sent off my order and check ($1320aus) to jac mac for 30 spline inner front axles and 30 spline rears and drive flanges.

unissamog 07-31-2002, 07:10 AM A thought on the rocker/door sills.
I believe that yours would be the same as the ones on my '87. The "box" sectio had rusted out BADLY on mine, so I replaced it by sliding a piece of 2x4x3/16" tube into it. It fit perfectly, and now the rocker itself is more than strong enough to take the rocks, and to jack on. I plan on tying the sill to the frame for more support, but so far so good.

yeah, but he doesnt want to have to deal with perfectly aligning the casting in the third member. i offered this to him, but he said that the conveinence of the jack mac thirds was worth it.
any chance you could get me a price on a pair, plus a full set of 30spl rears and drive flanges?

Rear 30 spline axles and drive flanges are $660AUS and last time I checked (6 months age) the completed machined casting was $300AUS.
To redrill the rover housing to take a stock toy third member took me about one hour. It is very easy to do. And the bonus is that in the front you run high pinion. Jac Mac doesent offer that.

redrangie 08-07-2002, 01:30 PM I found these here in denver:
•High Pinion Third Members
$1399
Reverse Rotation 5.29 Gears, Full Detroit Locker, built with Timken and Koyo bearings and a new Toyota housing. The third member is from 91-97 Landcruisers and bolts in replacing any 8" third member. It is built off of the stronger V6 design and is ideal for the front axle because it runs on the strong side of the gear
http://www.offroadsolutions.com/products/drivetrain.htm
These are fully built units, and supposedly quite bomb proof acording to my toy running friend. Gearing ratio is optional.
