Like how long? A guy that I used to wheel with had a long bed toyota with the front axle moved forward 2" and the rear axle moved rearward about 3" and he always did WAY better than I thought he would.

We recently took a group of solid axle Tacomas through the Rubicon a couple weeks ago. They did pretty well, especially considering they all have wheelbases of about 122 inches.

I'm at 112 and it works well for me, especially climbs.

I'm having an argument on another BBS.

Folks are saying that long wheelbases can't crawl. Never mind that most of these pinheads have never been off-road in their lives and get their ideas about wheeling from Car & Driver.

Now maybe there are better choices buy I know I've seen long wheelbase trucks do a lot of stuff that they supposedly couldn't, including crawling up and over some pretty good sizes rocks.

So I need ammo. Pictures mostly.

I already fire off the first round but I know they're going to come back.

Rock crawling and long wheelbases.
A buddy of mine runs EROCC and he has a 120" wheelbase and 2 and 1/2 ton axles. He does use a twin stick transfer case that gives him front wheel drive which helps a lot in those tight situations.

Most of us moved the axle a couple inches forward during the swap. My wheelbase is right about 124"-125".

What about longer bases?

I recall a friend who has a full size chevy longbed.

It was relatively mild, 4" lift, 33's, LSD, etc and meant for northern woodland wheeling.

It went through an amazing amount of stuff and I personally watched it climb grades well over 100%.

I also recall seeing long bed pickups in various wheeling magazines, although not too often, doing some farily impressive rockcrawling.

I know it's not a common sort of rig because the shorter stuff just works so nicely, but I also know I haven't hallucinated what I did see.

I don't know what area of the U.S. you live in, but out here in the south, long wheelbase is the norm. I'm sure you have seen a "hybrid". Their wheelbases are anywhere from about 115" up.
The longest wheelbase somebody has that I wheeled with was 148". He has 52" tires in the rear and 44" in the front.
I drive a Samurai with a 115" wheelbase.
It just all depends on what kind of terrain you are playing in.

Most of the guys from Wagoner Machine Shop up in Claremore are in the 110s-120s. Casey's CJ8 is at 125 inches. All of them run 44" TSLs, so that helps in the clearnace area. My wheelbase is going to end up at about 114" or so, most of the rocks, ledges, etc. around this area are about that height, so the longer wheelbase works out well.. of course the tight tree trails suck sometimes, but thats what cutting brakes & the gas pedal are for... :flipoff2:

Here in Colorado all the trails are tight with rock squezes.I currently am running a '73 Blazer with the wheelbase at 106" or so.It does climb some steep stuff. But the problem is break over angles.I am always hitting the rear shaft on the rocks.Of course with taller tires it wouldn't do it so much. But my Jeep will be shorter.
I used to wheel a Suburban with a wheelbase of 129".It would climb awesome but was too long for tighter trails.Like 350samuai said,It depends on the terrain.

Yeah. I'm a little kid.

I'm fucking great big, overgrown, 37 year old baby.

And if I wanted your opinion on whether or not I should be having an argument with somebody, I'd have asked you.

But I didn't

So until I do, or until you have something useful to say, how about you just kiss my entire, goat-smelling, hairy white ass.

I've wheeled everything from 81' to 122' and I think 112" is about my favorite. 100" is nice too but I'd rather be too long then too short. In my expirence having too short of a WB can stop you from making an obstacle while being too long will usually just require you to take a more interesting line. I won't go over 112" without some huge tires and a selectable front drive though. I22" can make non obstacles into the toughest part of a trail if you're trying to avoid body damage. My $.03 keep the change.

Not that I've done anything to serious but I've gotten my F-250 into some intersting stuff here in Utah. Although I did have a couple of dents and scratches to show for it. :D:D

The way I look at WB is simple who really cares? if it has 4wd then wheel it

Exactly...
I think I myself have proven to a few people that wheelbase don't always hurt you as much as alot of people think it does

I ran 109" for a long time. Both here in Oklahoma and at Moab I've found it to be too short, but I tend to push the envelope on the vertical stuff. I cut mine apart 2 weeks ago and am stretching it to what turned out to be 125".http://www.extreme4wheelin.com/tech/blazer_stretch/pictures.htm
The only thing about being long is that on tight trails body damage has to be completely acceptable. which those that have seen my truck will attest too.

I'm at 119" Shorter would be better, would like about 108" however, it works and I never have that cartwheeling feeling.

No, 100% grade would be equal rise for distance, like for every 10 feet it goes up 10 feet, a 45 degree angle.
