First things first, do you have any sort of emissions inspection where you live? If you do, it is against the law to put an earlier year model engine into a newer vehicle.

Especially the 96 being OBDII, any place that emissions tests will plug into the computer and have the computer spit out it's info. If you put an OBDI computer in there, the tester won't see it, and will automatically fail you.

If you are going stock for stock, I'd look at torque and horsepower graphs first. I remember hearing there were some years of 454 motors that were low hp.

If you are going to rebuild it, that's another thing.

fortunately here in arkansas we have no emmisions test and yes the motor has been rebuilt. the guy i am getting the motor and tranny from was going to use it in a tow rig for his race car and rebuilt it, he later put the6.2 diesel instead his dad makes that biodiesel, he just said i need to get new injectors that they are still the stockers and are only good up to 300hp "i think".......and i am only paying $1000 for the motor and transmission all i need to buy is the exhaust and i am running zoomies out of the hood hopefully so i know that the exhaust wont be a problem. when the motor is put in i am going to post pics or atleast updates of the build. including sas already got the 14 boltFF, leafsprings instead of blocks, and hopefully something bigger than the 35" mud grapplers. this was my daily driver and had a wreck so now i can really fix it how i want. currently has 6 inch pro-comp lift with the torsion bars cranked up. but anyhow thanks for the help and anyother comments or replys about anything i just mentioned i am wanting to do will be greatly appreciated.

Yours - 1996 Vortec 5700- 250 hp and 335 lb-ft
Other motor-1987 TBI 454- 230 hp and 385 lb-ft.

Honestly I would just stick with your 350cid.
For $1000 you can play with your motor and easily get more hp and torque than that 454.

or you could very easily get alot more power than your 350 with some motor work to the 454. just get rid of the tbi and get some good older heads and put some higher compression pistons and run propane.

This is kinda of off-topic, since my shit is not fuel injected, but when I did my 350-454 swap (78-80 year motor difference), it was well worth the trouble.
Took me all of 1 days worth of work, and even though both motors were high mileage, the 454 beats it hands down.

I recommend the 454 swap. Big blocks always rule.:smokin:

well i looked into the propane injection and i think that may be somethng to do down the road but right now it just seems to complicated and expensive. does anyone know if the motor mounts will be the same and if not what do i do. and is there any hd engine cross members that will work on my 96 suburban.
