cwate 10-15-2001, 11:18 AM Every u-joint I've ever seen is forged.

bronco78 10-15-2001, 12:16 PM Who is making a special forged U-joint? Spicer? If so whats the PN? My wife works for the largest spicer dealer in AK and has not heard of a new 297x type u-joint, other that the Snaptight design, which is nothing but a new seal design.

JONYJEEPER 10-15-2001, 01:37 PM part # is da 5-760X...their made by spicer, the distributor here told me that the old 529's were cast or something like that and that these are a forged joint.they even look stronger than the old ones,i geuss we'll see
Blackjack 10-15-2001, 02:36 PM Jony you are correct, the 5-297x and 5-297-1x use cast crosses. The 5-760x uses a forged cross. Spicer will not confirm if they are stronger, but a few sources I talked to claim about 20-25%. I have not seen them yet, but I have some on order and will let you know when I have them.
UGET IT 10-15-2001, 02:39 PM Thanks for the Info!
bronco78 10-15-2001, 04:07 PM 5-760x is a snaptight design of the 5-297x The cross is slightly diffeent to except the new seal but other than that, I can see no real difference. I have one of each sitting in front of me right now. I must be missing something about this new super joint? I've broken both, though not under the same conditions, or on the same trail. So a this Vs that joint is not possible from my perspective.
JONYJEEPER 10-15-2001, 04:59 PM i have had these in my jeep now for two runs and no breaks!! I'M RUNNING 38"SX'S AT 100 TO 1!!all im saying is that so far there better.one of the runs was the northwest rockcrawl and i wasn't real easy on em...

bronco78 10-15-2001, 06:16 PM i have had these in my jeep now for two runs and no breaks!! Ahh yes, but huge difference between a "light" weight jeep, and an Anchor of a Big Bronco. Fully loaded the bronco is a beast. My stub axle may have contributed to the last u-joint failure (5-760x) It had been through one other joint destruction, and the ears I believe gave out and spread, causing the joint to spit the cups out. Or at least that is what I think may have happen after looking at the mess at the top of the hill. I had to stay on the gas to complete the obstacle, and that pretty well trashed the axle halves and u joint. Well see how the new axles and joints do. 297 in the left side and I'll put a 760 in the right
JONYJEEPER 10-16-2001, 09:34 AM are you putting the full snap rings around the caps of your joints?....any new pics militaryota, ours or yours.
bronco78 10-16-2001, 10:04 AM are you putting the full snap rings around the caps of your joints?....
Yes, running full snap rings. But these are OEM grade spicer shafts, nothing fancy. The price is right, but I would prefer to break less. A D60 in front isin the works, nothing that $$$ can not fix... <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0">
H8monday 10-16-2001, 10:07 AM these joints were supposed to be the new Spicer joints, but I didnt keep the boxes, so have no numbers to check.
Can you tell by looking at them? They were different than the 297-X joints that I normaly use, in fact when I first looked at them they looked like they were the wrong joints, and I was about to get pissed, but when the caps are on they are the same dimensions.
If this is the new joints they did not hold up very well. They were installed in inners and outers that have never been involved in a previouse breakage, and the joints were brand new, with no previouse stress(except for the trailer ride to the Hammers), they both let go with in the 1st 15 minutes on Sledge Hammer.
