Got an AW4 in my XJ. Thinking of the AtlasII with 4.3 or 3.8. I've got discs in the rear, but will the toque multiplication of the auto along with the 4.3:1 cause me to drive thru my brakes? Oh yeah, 4.56s and 35s right now.

hey joel. I had to drop the tranny today to replace the flywheel. My donor 4.0 from a 98 XJ had a warped flywheel (must have been dropped from the recyclers) that made a really bad vibration. So off came the TC, tranny, exhaust, starter, long arms, crossmember. Got it back together and gave it a maiden voyage. Drives pretty nicely. My new steering has just a hair of bump steer (must have measured wrong) and I might have some intereference with drag link and sway bar link when turned fully to right and drooped on pass side. Other than that, I am ready to wheel.

thanks for the email last week. I have been too busy to reply. Got the ARB fixed and back together. Basically, I have been wrenching for 2 months.

with your set up the 3.8 will be fine. i run a th400, atlas3.8, and 4.56's with 42's so i know it will be plenty for the 35's that you run.

In my old 94 XJ I had the Tera 4 to 1 with 4.56s and 34 swampers. The crawl ratio was awesome. The lower gearing was harder to stop but not bad like you hear stories about. The 94 never had good brakes from the factory. The newer system with rear discs would have been killer. I would go 4.3 and beef up the brakes if needed. But you should be fine.. There always neutral if you get in a bind.:D

My rig is set up with the 4 to 1 with 4.88 r/p and auto trany (999) with 35" tires and it stops just fine. You should have no problems.

I had 4.0/999(2.74 first gear)4.1 and 4.56 with 38.5's. That setup stopped fine on the road but when the rear drums got wet off road it sucked. Now i have the same setup but 5.13, 40's and rear disk. Stops great on or off road.
