Can anyone tell me how to identify which vehicle my Dana 60 front end came out of? When it comes to purchasing brake calipers, gears, lockers and bearings it would be nice to know what vehicle the axle came from.

It is a king pin, high pinon, drivers side drop Dana 60.

I will gladly go find the rest of the information anyone might need if I can. Or for those of you who don't know exactly which vehicle their axle came from, how do you know what to ask for at the parts store????

The front end appears to have the longer of the short side axle housing tubes. I would suspect this might be one the coveted Ford 1977-1979 d60's. What do you guys think? The wms measurement is 69.5".

Have you looked for the build number on the axle?

Sure looks like Ford.

I have looked a little for it, at the time I wasn't able to see all the surfaces very easily. I am going to look a bit more here this afternoon now that it is visible from all angles.

Is the number I am looking for a B.O.M. #? There is definitely no tag on the diff cover as the previous owner got rid of it or?

Any idea where exactly these numbers should be located?

The number on the center section says 620093R or B?

I found the correct number, it is 610023 and that would make it a 1978-1979 F350 axle. That number is tiny and on the tube not the center section, I guess that number on the center section is a part number?

Yes, build code is on axle tube. Axle is 1978-1979 F250/F350 (Snow Fighter). There should be a suffix to the build code which would tell you if it's 3.54 or 4.10, open or L/S (not that it's important since you'll probably be regearing anyway).

Yup, almost every dana axle I've ever looked at had a BOM stamped into one of the axletubes, whether it was front or rear didn't matter. That is the key to finding out what you got.

I definitely appreciate the help figuring that out. I had a feeling it was the 79 Ford D60 just by looking at the drivers side axle tube. Knowing what it came out of will help the guy at the parts counter not lose his mind.

If they're working at a parts counter they probably alerady have. People ask those guys some stupid questions sometimes.

i gave up on ordering parts from my local stores when i said that i needed "wheel studs for a dana 60 front axle out of an '83 dodge w350" and the guy replied with "so 2 or 4 wheel drive?" :shaking: The auto parts stores around here are terrible, its no longer a requirement to know anything about cars/trucks, they just have to be able to push buttons on the computer.
